No, it really isn't. It's due to mental illness. It is completely inappropriate for you to condemn their character because of something they have no choice over. You really ought to apologize for that insensitive remark.
I never apologize for what I believe in. I am not condemning their character at all, depression is not part of a person's character IMO. Depression is an illness that people have to get over. It is like saying that cancer is part of a person's character, which is silly.
Here is what Webster's says about it:
2

b (1) : a feature used to separate distinguishable things into categories; also : a group or kind so separated advertising of a very primitive character (2) : the detectable expression of the action of a gene or group of genes (3) : the aggregate of distinctive qualities characteristic of a breed, strain, or type a wine of great character
c : the complex of mental and ethical traits marking and often individualizing a person, group, or nation the character of the American people

I believe that people have a choice over how they live their life. They can choose to be happy or they can choose to be miserable. It is as simple as that. Once I chose to quit my whining and be the best that I could be, I changed my life for the better. Now I look forward to a struggle in life but also a better future than before I went back to school for Accounting.
Mental illness can be treated. Those who live with it and do not seek treatment are not being smart. There is help, as someone has said in this thread. People who care will try to help. The fool is the one who will push people away and wallow in misery.
