Powerful people control big things, that's known, and probably even follows the law of physics. The difference between free and unfree press is whether others can disagree whenever they like.

KlassWar wrote:Back in the good old days before neoliberalism political parties had their own newspapers, some mass organizations (usually big unions) had theirs, and small independent media run by intellectuals on ideological lines was relatively common, and they used to allow voters to be more or less reasonably informed. It went to shit when the neoliberals took power and sold out every chunk of civil society to the highest bidder, of course.

In the west, all these voices still exist, only that some voices are much bigger and they drown out less funded ones. Everyone pretend or imagine they have free thought but everything reaches "Washington consensus" + "Liberal vs Conservative" anyway.
In China, there is only one voice. “Mainstream thoughts” they call it, like its supposed to be a good thing. We also have "Patriotic anti-west types" vs "Liberal anti-everything-Chinese types"
In the end money and power speaks, but at least option 1 is a lot less boring.

unbalanced zealot wrote:I once talked to 89 student dissident Wang Dan and I asked him if there were to be national governmental elections would a majority of people vote for the CCP (CPC)? He said that initially there may well be the sentiment to embrace a whole new non-CCP era, but if the CCP stayed in the game, in the next election people may well gravitate back in their direction. He also said that, no doubt, the majority of the political candidates in any potential open election would actually be ex-CCP people.

Yes, and in a way, Xin Jinping preempted this - and prefiguring what Putin has been doing - by simultaneously cracking down on party corruption, strengthening the state's hold over the economy and restricting political liberalisation, managing such things that are recognised by the Party leadership as likely leading to Soviet-style involution.

That's an interesting point.

And it's actually getting to the stage that if major Australia political parties don't start "cracking down on party corruption, etc." they're going to lose their grip on power as the population starts defecting to alternatives.

And if you are not content with either major parties, there are always micro parties to vote for, but overall the political system will be highly stable in Australia. In the case of China, by contrast, I think it can run on authoritarianism for a long time but not in this current state of heightened restriction and repression that leaves very little political or civic space for letting off the steam.

And really good to see you around, UZ!
