A class act. Good man. Great role model. By the mercy of God, rest in peace Neil Armstrong.

The man truly was a class act, never sought any fame or fortune based on his monumental achievements.

Lots of good comments in this thread so far.

Neil Armstrong was cooler than cool. 8)

Buzz was shameless in cashing in on his product placement opportunities. Neil I think did one or two car commercials. Also Buzz has that sort of personality where showmanship comes naturally to him - so he does all the public events and never misses a media opportunity. You hear even less about the third guy though...

Rather shocking and it feels a bit like the end of an era closing in. Not quite sure what to say beyond the fact that we felt as if the heavens were in reach that night. It's something truly difficult to explain to young people now that everything from car-phones to the blackberry is within a fingertip's reach. That it night it felt more akin to folk magic than the triumph of science, and that was alright.

Unlike Buzz Aldrin who asked for $150 when my four-year-old Godson and his friends asked for his signature on their NASA caps.

That's absolutely disgraceful.

Often I wonder what it was like to live in that era before this technophile age where everything is computerised. It must have been a revolutionary event in 1969.

Soon there will be nobody alive who has walked on the moon.

It says something of our goals and ambition. It's really quite pathetic.

We still have plenty of that.
It's our competence that's in question.
I suppose we could still continue with space exploration...if we gutted just about everything else.
At least in the US, the future of space travel is leaning toward private tourism and commercial flights.

NASA gets less than half a percent of the federal budget.

To tripple that, we wouldn't need to gut all that much.

The youngest living person to walk on the moon is Charles Duke, and he's 76. We should have at least been back there before now. The United States' Great Wall, it's Caesar, the thing it will be remembered for for eons is walking on the moon. To have taken that, called it good enough, and then decided the bragging point sixty years ago was good enough and now it's time to concentrate on retirement and slowly smother the hope and promise it brought in favor of golf courses and a vague assumption some rich guy or the Chinese or Russians can lead humanity to the stars is...depressing.
