While walking on a canal bike-path a few weeks ago, I came to a section where condos are being built.

Because of the construction, there was no footpath or paved cycle path: just a shared peastone driveway for about 1 km.

As I was walking, I heard a guy yell behind me, "Get off the path, people! This is a bike path!"

A few seconds later, I felt someone push my arm, and then turned around to see a guy fall off his bicycle onto the road.

I guess he hit me, but I hardly felt anything.

He got up, and I saw that he probably weighed half of what I do. He was probably gay, and was with another small gay man.

He was scratched up, and sort of pissed off. As well as scared when he saw how much bigger than he I was.

All this to say... bicycles are more compatible with pedestrians than they are with cars. In this case, it was the guy on the bicycle who hurt himself by running into a pedestrian (me).

Cars kill everyone.

Bikes can actually kill people. A college student was convicted for murdering a senior woman in her 70s by her bike and she was riding the bike, while listening music via her cellphone and holding a cup of coffee. I once stopped a woman's bike by my own hand, which almost ran over me without my intervention.

This only demonstrates how dangerous cyclists are to those around them. On the roads they are dangerous to themselves, and on foot paths they are dangerous to pedestrians. Thanks for highlighting this truth.

Note: Cars don't go on foot or bike paths, so you were 100% safe from getting hit by a car.

Do electric bikes count ?
Even the fucking rickshaws are zooming past at 25 miles/hour these days.
I had to recalibrate my driving because I need more time and space to overtake them now.\
What is this world coming to ?

Move to Australia...

Lowest Population Density in the world! Roads are always fairly good even in the "big" cities.

You'd love Melbourne. Strong Jewish community in Melbourne. St Kilda and Elsternwick are called "Little Israel on the Nepean (Hwy)". Plenty of fellow Jews.

The low population density is accomplished by having massive uninhabited parts of the country, just like Canada.

Low traffic volume is a result of sprawl, which is very expensive to maintain for future generations (if they exist). Better urbanism would eliminate the need for extinction-inducing cars.

This is the slogan of the future generations, along with "Debt Race 2000." This is what consumer idiot generations will leave as their "legacy."

Another idiot consumer meme is that "bikes can kill just like cars" one that floats around commercial media comments, like so many turds in a harbor of untreated sewage. It's like all the years of physics and our day-to-day experience of running across busy streets filled with Deathmobiles... is magically erased when we sit in front of our TVs or computers and watch advertising (and planted articles from car merchants) and let them have our minds for a "few harmless seconds."

Bikes are road hogs. They dont pay tax for the upkeep of the roads but slow down the flow of traffic, usually in an obnoxious and self righteous way.

They should be grateful for the cycle lanes the tax payer subsidies for them and stick to those.

In short they should be restricted to a play/weekend thing. Not a mode of transport. Not for grown ups anyways.

If bikes are road hogs, do we ever see them double parked and blocking a whole lane? Cars do.

Do you ever get stuck behind a large number of bikes during rush hour? No, but you get stuck behind cars.

Do emergency vehicles have to slow down because cyclists do not pull over in time? I have never seen this, but I have seen cars do this very frequently.

I would argue that cars do more to slow down traffic than bikes.

As for paying for the roads, most roads are actually subsidised by non-motorists. I think the UK is the exception. Taxes on gas and other road related fees do not pay for road building and maintenance in US and Canada.

I would argue that the motorist is the one who has the taxpayer subsidising their mode of transport. This does not even include the extra haelth care costs associated with cars, which is also paid by the taxpayers in the developed world.

If you are arguing that this means that they (i.e. cars) should be restricted to a play/weekend thing and should not be a mode of transport, I agree.

Is that what you will do when you become Dear Leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Kanadastan?

I like how urbanites can fantasize about this shit like the rural population doesn't even exist. :hmm:

More like when I become the socialist Mayor of Edmonton.

Bike paths and city streets are a municipal thing.

Many cities have made car free parts in certain areas. It usually starts as a pilot project hwere they close it down for the summer and see how it affects local businesses, traffic around the area, etc.

True.

I suppose it doesn't matter to me about cars anyway, I have no special affinity for our petroleum dependent civilization we have created and don't expect it to last.

After we warm the earth up into a tropical paradise, I would still be able to transport my customers to my new beachfront property via horse and buggy. So perhaps some equestrian investments are in order...... :excited:

No one was discussing rural populations at all, or ignoring them.

How would it affect rural people if Edmonton, or any other city, were to make parts of downtown car free?

Making cities car free has no impact on rural populations at all, as far as I can see.

Not discussing them is ignoring them.

As for downtown car banning, people should watch out if ideologues disguise themselves as pragmatists to slip in through election. A raving loon is a raving loon whatever pretences of reasonableness he makes. Corbyn is like that, he is a completely demented ideologue but he is sane enough to pretend to be a reasonable person long enough to get elected.
