how democratic socialism would work - Page 4 - Politics Forum.org | PoFo

Wandering the information superhighway, he came upon the last refuge of civilization, PoFo, the only forum on the internet ...

As either the transitional stage to communism or legitimate socio-economic ends in its own right.

whoa I just reread the thread and there seems to be some confusion here.
I said democratic socialism would function via a network of democratically ran credit unions that in turn would fund democratically ran businesses.
I also said that this would most likely lead to less risky investments.
Since luxury items are often times associated with high risk there would probably be less of them.
I didn't say anything about banning anything.

Thanks.

Its interesting that when large parts of the world live at or below the poverty line and in richest county one sixth of people are reliant on food stamps that the thing which excites the conservatives here is whether they will be able to purchase designer jeans. Apparently its what defines them as individuals. (are they really that shallow ?) However, I don't think however they are in much position to lecture any one else on elitism.

W should be asking the worlds poorest whether the worlds resources are best channelled to producing endless varaitions on the trainer in sweat shops or providing basic provision for clean water. They have a right to live life as individuals too.

But we're not talking about merely m&ms or designer jeans.

We're talking about allowing a variety of products to be sold; to encourage innovation and creativity. To strive to continue improving available products.

Consumers have the power. I am saying let consumers buy what they enjoy. I don't think that is elitist at all

ronimacarroni wrote:The way I think democratic socialism would work would be as follows.
1.The country would be divided in municipalities
2.Each municipality would have a credit union
3.members of credit unions would vote democratically on what businesses to fund
4.The loans would be interest free
5.Credit unions could link up through the internet to fund major projects
6.Only people who work in the business would be allowed to be shareholders and they could decide how to allocate their money.(people who work harder would get bonuses for instance)
7.There would also be public forums (free togas provided)

You were very sharp mentioning the togas, since your model sounds more like aristocratic Rome than socialism!

Oh, and you fight us in the streets before we take state power.

I'm not really worried about your ilk. The real threat is the ruling liberal state, you're just a bunch of rabid dogs that get put down whenever you show up in force.

"He believes in redistributing wealth, not in policies that grow our economy"

While I don't support Obama, he certainly understands what an economy needs (whether to not he acted on it ). Redistributing wealth adds to the longevity of by placating the populace. This is actually positive in the long run, because it makes it so the US can siphon resources from poorer countries. Global imperialism is what fuels our economy, and preserving it grows capitalist infrastructure that can later be socialized and used for the good of all. On top of that, redistribution of wealth stimulates the economy by giving people more purchasing power. This makes them want to go out and spend money, instead of locking up the economy by saving and rationing it. By making redistribution continual, the economy should be more stable and less prone to recession. If the trick-down theory worked, capitalism would be stable. This is basically artificially enforcing what people think capitalism should look like.

Anyways, this is obviously not socialist from the first point I made. It is a positive for all of the capitalists, even if the ones that have made it big can only think about short-term profits.

Yeah, I guess that must be why he reappointed all the usual Wall Street suspects to the top economic jobs, right after they had proved they were prepared to destroy the economy for their cronies' profits, and didn't care if they did.
