OK...need help.

Generally speaking I'm reasonably competent with simple graphics jobs like resizing images, but lately I've been struggling. My work VLE has a requirement of 90 x 90 pixels and a maximum file size of 6Kb for avatars and students keep sending me their holiday snaps for me to crop and resize as avatars, but I can't seem to reduce them without badly affecting the image. Cropping and resizing to 90 x 90 pixels isn't a problem, but the last two I did that to have had 30Kb+ file sizes and if I try to lower the pixels/inch then the image becomes unrecognisable. Do I need to do something with the original image before I crop and resize, or is it something else I need to do?

If I knew what either of those were I'd be in a position to answer!

I'm using either Adobe Photoshop or Paint.net (depending on whether I'm at work or at home.

TCR, I already tried to reduce the quality and the pic became unrecognisable.

Okay, so the changes I made for the second picture (5.7kB) were:

  • Whilst resizing I reduced the X/Y resolutions to 32 pixels/inch.
  • Interpolation was cubic (not that that makes any difference so far as I could tell).
  • Quality was 80.
  • EXIF data, thumbnail and XMP data were not saved.
  • DCT method (no idea what that means but changing it helped) was floating-point.
  • I did not use "Progressive", whatever that is.
  • Subsampling was 4:2:2 (chroma halved).

I also use gimp.

I took this image

and sized it down to 100x100 and 5.83 KB

Here is your pic for comparison

All I did was manually size it, hit dot for dot and enhanced once.

I have to say, I think that is a terrible photo of the actor, the look on his face just says "Duurrrr..."

Perhaps, but then...

...doesn't exactly scream "towering intellect" either.
