There was a tattooist in my old university town, who has a pretty good likeness of Durer's famous Self Portrait. It was pretty impressive!

I don't care if I'm the only one who posts here, I like this thread too much to let it die.

Judith Beheading Holofernes, by Caravaggio

"Approaching to his bed, she took hold of the hair of his head, and said, Strengthen me, O Lord God of Israel, this day! And she smote twice upon his neck with all her might, and she took away his head from him."
(From the apocryphal Book of Judith)

Image
The Taking of Christ, also by Caravaggio

"Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, "Whom do you seek?" They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I am he." Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. When Jesus said to them, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground."
(John 18:4-7)

The strong contrasts between light and dark really show the extent of Caravaggio's mastery of the chiaroscuro technique.

Wasn't this initially about slicing a piece of bread? I think I read something about this.

^ Sublime. Notice how he gave her the red beret that was identifying feature of prostitutes. Munch's art as a whole is exactly that, controversial, dark, cynic. I really adore it:

That's probably caused by his sister's suffering from schizophrenia. The whole dark world he paints I mean.

Something more uplifting:

Certainly, not exclusively though. There were a lot of things wrong with his life from early on. He once said:

"The angels of fear, sorrow, and death stood by my side since the day I was born."

That seemed to have been the fuel for his melancholic, glim view of life that is reflected in his paintings.

"I live with the dead - my mother, my sister, my grandfather, my father… Kill yourself and then it's over. Why live?"

A decadent artist could have said this.

Excellent painting. It captures the upper-class bar environment well and makes one wish they were there, waiting to be served by the cocktail waitress.
