I'm not a huge fan of realism, but a lot of Bouguereau's work is very mesmerizing. It's idealistic yet realistic, which makes it all the better--it's as if he's saying you don't need to go into the unreal to find beauty. I think it goes against the concept that beauty and happiness are romanticized ideals.

And I love how he uses bright colours to give people in his work an angelic feel.

I like lithographs by Eugene Delacroix, especially the ones portraying the characters from Goethe's Faust.
This is a view of Mephistopheles.

Caspar David Friedrich is from the Romantic period and for me is one of my favourite school of art because it produces the most interesting pieces of art that will captivate the viewer of the painting.

Otto Dix

I love how he juxtaposes youth and death, and how he portrays sex as used to rejuvenate the aged or soldiers disturbed by war (not shown below). Of course I also appreciate the sombre, dark tones he employs. Ah, the Germans.

I'll post modern art now.

Chagall's work is very appealing and inspirational. The painting instills a sense of assurance and belief in a greater being who lives through his works.

It's a shame that there hasn't been a response to this thread since December 19. In any case...
