"The Spirit of the Dead Keep Watch" by Paul Gauguin

Ah, I love Gauguin. Primitive and spiritual, his work is really one of the best escapes from modern society that I can think of, other than maybe going off to the Kalahari and living with the Bushmen.

Something about his work reminds me of Magical Realism, like something out of One Hundred Years of Solitude. There's definitely a dream-like quality to it.

Painted in 1906 by Osman Hamdi Bey (1842-1910)... He is still the most celebrated Turkish painter.

In old times, walking tortoises carrying candles on their shells were used to illuminate the medium in garden parties of the summer after sunset.

However, there are many theories around that the theme of the painting is just an allegory.

Poor tortoises.

The most popular one involves: The old, tired and hunchbacked tortoise trainer is nobody but heartbroken Osman Hamdi himself, who once dreamed of transforming his country with his art. Slow moving, slow learning tortoises are nobody but the people who already start leaving him as some tortoises leave their master in the painting.

But he doesn't seem concerned with the tortoises, he seems to look through the window.

These scupltures were created by Ron Mueck, an Australian hyperrealist sculptor. You could see the complexity of his sculptures, detailing every part of it and this is surely the work of fine craftmanship.

Leonid Afremov - Reflection of the Night. And I don't care, if you haven't heard of him, because I haven't either. I just saw this on site and I liked what I saw.
