Actually it was my reading of Russian literature that inspired me to learn Russian.

Russians don't really read much either, but they are immensely proud of their 19th century writers.

Because it sounds like this kid is lazy and the mom has never read the book either. If she did she would know that it has a very important message about race relations, especially in this age. Atticus Finch is one of the great American characters, too.
