Whats your favourite decade for American films? Mine is the 1970s with films like A Clockwork Orange, Taxi Driver, The Godfather I & II, One Flew of the Cockoos Nest, Deliverance, Annie Hall and Apocalypse Now. Has any other decade seen the US match the 1970's in terms of film? For me, i say the 70's was the best for US film.

thirties and forties had the film noirs, which were great. Although I agree that teh 70's was a good decade for film. Modern films, while good, are often just special effects and gory entertainment or moralising rubbish. A lot don't have the same substance in the plot.

You forgot the Deer Hunter. =D

Anyways, I'm torn between the 70's and 60's for the latter had its fair share of Spaghetti Westerns...then again, those weren't American films =\

80's

- Predator.

- Aliens.

- Conan the Barbarian.

- The Princess Bride.

- Full Metal Jacket.

- Red Dawn.

- Porky's.

- Goodfellas (1990 is so close ...)

- Scarface.

- The Untouchables.

- Terminator.

- Robocop.

Now, the 90's had some seriously quality flix ...

- Reservoir Dogs.

- Pulp Fiction.

- Braveheart.

- Casino.

- Grosse Point Blank.

- The Mummy (come on people, sleeper hit if I ever saw one.)

- The Usual Suspects.

- The Crow.

Now, I could go on but as we all know certain forumulas became far too frequent in every movie that came out of Hollywood ...

There were some seriously great potential movies that just took a total dump because of cheese factor ...

- Independence Day.

- Terminator 2.

I don't want to go on with this ... but you get the point right?

Hollywood starting adding some deep moral message to every movie in the 90's also ... a movie couldnt just be a movie anymore ... it had to tell some story ... and make some psuedo intellectual message ...

Plus the good guy ALWAYS wins ... and imo good and bad are just too distinct in movies these days ... the line is just too clear. It would be nice if they made some movies that reflected real life as opposed to some 'Hero saves the world and gets the girl while showing that smoking is bad for you and you should be polite to people' kind of message ...
