Immigration.

How about the President's immigration policy. He recently announced that he would like to legalize most illegal aliens and essentially have unlimited legal immigration into this country.

This doesn't sound bad until you look at the facts. But the facts show this would be disastrous.

First, illegal immigrants consume far more in government services than they pay in taxes. This is an easy one to show. The services most immigrants use are no different than lower income Americans; education, health, roads and other infrastructure, police and fire. The list goes on.

With an average immigrant laborer making less than, let's say, $20,000 per year, they would be likely to pay around $2500 in income tax. Let's say the immigrant has two children (many immigrant families have more than 2 kids). With the cost of K-12 education running between seven and ten thousand dollars per year, taxpayers would have to spend at least $14,000 to educate this family's kids. It is easy to see that taxpayers are already behind $11,500 before other services are considered.

How about roads and other infrastructure. If you live in an urban area, traffic must be getting worse every year.

How much does it cost to build new freeways? I just typed "freeway construction cost" into google and up came articles suggesting $30 million to $65 million per mile. Is it realistic to believe that the U.S. taxpayer is going to afford new freeway construction to accommodate millions of new drivers who essentially pay very little income tax?

Healthcare is no different. Here in Los Angeles many hospitals have gone out of business or shut emergency rooms. By law they must treat everyone who shows up at the emergency room whether or not they have health insurance. Why do you think our health insurance premiums are increasing at 16% a year.

It is easy to see that the U.S. taxpayer can not afford unlimited immigration as the President is proposing.

Socialistic/Welfare State policies do not mix with open borders. I think that instead of throwing away the immigrants, we throw away the programs. With a globalized work force, and more people here in the US working, there would be no need for the programs that are in place now in the United States. Alas, this is but a dream, but it would work tremendously compared to the restriction of immigration and the protectionist policies we are trying to employ today.

This immigration policy is a blessing yo. Don't you realise that thousands of illegal immigrants do back breaking labor for scraps of change?! Bush is giving them the rights they deserve, the rights you and me take for granteed. Like minimum wage, job security, and health plans..

Alot of times these greedy coporations screw over even the LEGIT aliens. They could be here on Visa, and because they're stay is only for about six months, the fat cat plays with his balls of yarn not caring how poor and desitutute they live thier life for the next six months. And because these people are use to living it rough, they deal. It doesn't make it right. And that's why I get even more angery when people complain about thier stupid problems like gay rights and crap. It's all well and good, but there's people right here in our own country suffering alot more then you. Worry about the greater needs then concern yourself with the minority. (Pun intended.)

Once again, Bush is being a hero. Half way to abolishing the hidden slave laborers that is our capitalist country.

I agree with your point that welfare and ulimited immigration don't mix.

But ulimited immigration is not necessarily a good thing. Historically, the immigrant population has assimilated into the American society and culture. Today there is very little assimilation. I live in Los Angeles and in very large portions of town English is not spoken. The number one television station here in the ratings is Spanish only.

I don't believe it does the country good to have two very separate societies that don't intermingle. Eventually, you will have Serbia or something along those lines.

My point is that we should accept immigrants in numbers that are likely to assimilate into and add to our culture, but not in numbers that will overwhelm it.
