President Trump's chief strategist Steve Bannon leaves post
Mr Bannon was a key adviser to Donald Trump during the general election campaign and has been a contentious presence in the White House.

The former leader of conservative news website Breitbart News has pressed Mr Trump to follow through with his campaign promises.

But he has also clashed with some of the US President's closest advisers, including son-in-law Jared Kushner.

The New York Times, citing a person close to Mr Bannon, reported he had submitted his resignation on 7 August and said that it was set to be announced this week, but had been delayed by the violence in Virginia over the weekend.

This week, Mr Bannon gave an interview to the liberal American Prospect in which he appeared to be undermining Mr Trump's position on North Korea.

He told associates that he thought he was talking off the record to an associate.

WASHINGTON — Friday will be controversial White House chief Strategist Steve Bannon’s final day working in the West Wing. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders issued a statement to the press pool describing the move as a mutual decision between Bannon and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly on Friday.

“White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Steve Bannon have mutually agreed today would be Steve’s last day. We are grateful for his service and wish him the best,” Sanders said.

The official word from the White House came after a slew of reports about Bannon’s departure. According to a New York Times report published shortly before Sanders’ statement, President Trump “told senior aides that he has decided to remove” Steve Bannon, the controversial White House chief strategist. ABC News and other outlets reported that Bannon had already resigned.

Both the White House and Bannon did not immediately respond to multiple requests for comment from Yahoo News.

Prior to the Times report, the conservative journalist Matt Drudge, who enjoys a close relationship with the White House, declared that Bannon’s time in the West Wing was coming to an end. Axios also reported that a review conducted by new White House chief of staff John Kelly was expected to conclude with an “imminent” announcement of Bannon’s departure.

Trump’s White House had been infamously volatile with a series of high profile departures. Bannon had regularly been involved in infighting with other top aides and rumors of his potential dismissal swirled at multiple points. The reports of a Bannon exit intensified after an he gave an extensive interview to the liberal American Prospect that was published on Wednesday. In it, Bannon described some of his disagreements with other top officials and appeared to undermine the president’s position on North Korea.

Bannon was a key figure in Trump’s shocking upset victory in last year’s presidential election. Prior to joining Trump’s campaign, he ran the conservative news site Breitbart News, which he once proclaimed was the “platform for the alt-right.” At Breitbart, Bannon found a base for his philosophy of economic nationalism and staunch opposition to immigration and political correctness. His ideology led many to see him as a key architect of Trump’s victory, but it also drew criticism from liberals who saw him as a dangerous zealot.

Interesting development. I wonder if it has something to do with the Charlottesville issue and CEOs turning away from Trump.

Yep, Trump is powerless. No one left to support him except the police, the military, and at least 100 million people.

Trump may not be powerless, but he's clearly useless. This administration is a total shit show.

Bannon completely ruled out a military option as if the Trump administration were not serious about bombing North Korea. He is also accused of leaking internal information to the media to go after his foes in the West Wing.

His beginning coalition left a lot to be desired. :*(
You are correct, he needs to do it right this time. With all the faux outrage, I honestly expect him to screw up again trying to gain allies he does not really need. Hard to tell though. His comments on Charlottesville show he is still unsure of himself. I wish he would call. :D I would tell him to go back to pushing his campaign promises no matter what happens, and leave all other decisions to the bureaucrats for now.

Edit:
Good old one degree popping in to say up is down, slavery is freedom, and hate is love.

Almost like saying there are two sides to everything @mikema63 ? :D

Well Trump has almost completely ejected the "alt-right" icons who helped to get him elected. If that doesn't display his raw lust for power and lack of real ideals clearly I don't know what does.

Bumbling fool, Trump is a bumbling fool. That's how to say it properly in English.

So now he is a lame duck president. The generals seem to have become extraordinarily powerful. You'd think Americans would be a little more concerned about the military taking over. But when socio-economic inequality gets too great, the resulting political instability often results in military men taking over the reins of power.

Within the OECD I think it is only Turkey and Mexico that beat America on inequality. Neither are particularly stable societies. The military plays an important role in holding those nations together.

It is bit like watching the end of the Roman Republic. So, are we seeing the end of the American Republic and the beginning of Imperial America?
