Double standards are constantly manifested in the US foreign policy, which consist in the fact that the same phenomenon can be condemned or, conversely, supported by both politicians and the media, depending on whether it is beneficial to them or not. This is especially true for color revolutions and anti-state protest movements, which the US actively support in countries that are not favorable to them.
Washington constantly accuses Russia and other unwanted countries of limiting and violating freedom of speech. In November 2017, the US Ministry of Justice forced Russian television channel Russia Today (RT) and Sputnik news agency, operating in the United States, to register as foreign agents, otherwise they would face a criminal case. However, on November 30, Russian journalists were denied accreditation in the US Congress relating to the registration of the TV channel as a foreign agent.
When Russia adopted a law allowing the media to be recognized as an agent, if it receives funding from foreign states or organizations, that has provoked a negative reaction from the American side. Senator J. McCain immediately accused the Russian authorities of dictatorship and violation of freedom of speech, even though Russian law for the media on the status of foreign agents is almost an exact copy of the 1938 law of the US, but it is much milder than it. Nevertheless, the State Department condemned Moscow's mirror measures, calling them "a violation of human rights" and "a threat to freedom of the press." As the Americans said, the new legal norms will further "restrict" freedom of the press and speech in Russia, and will also be an excuse for attacks on NGOs and publications. The United States demonstrated again that they consider it possible to expose Russian media to aggressive attacks, to make groundless and absurd accusations against them, and to expect Russia to provide the most comfortable working conditions for the American media in return. The US diplomatic department urged Russia not to resort to such measures. According to Russian diplomats the logic of the Americans' actions towards Russia is "another example of double standards" and an attempt to turn everything "upside down."
Thus, the US again demonstrates double standards. Even though US Ambassador John Huntsman convinces the Russian government of America's readiness to assist in the restoration of bilateral ties with the Russian Federation, the scandal associated with Russian media in the United States does not cease. Moreover, the State Department's charges indicate Washington's unwillingness to improve bilateral relations. The US Constitution presupposes full freedom of the press, but the country's leadership was able to circumvent these norms by introducing restrictions on Russian companies through the law on foreign agents.
