Pinochet saved Chile from a terrible fate. You can no more treat Communists gently (they'll never reciprocate anyway and they always do worse if you let them win) than you can treat cancer with hugs and kisses, you have to cut it out and kill it. :(

But Pinochet is a good example of how the US has usually approached socialism.

First they told a lie about how the evil Russian communists were responsible. They were not, as the KGB’s own declassified documents show.

Then they told a lie about how Allende was oppressive and dangerous. He was not, and the KGB papers again show this.

Then they supported a right wing dictatorship that tortured and killed children. Of course, they had to actually destroy a democracy to do that.

And finally, they profited immensely from the dictatorship, which was the actual point all along.

And this is why I think the US fear of socialism is based almost solely on propaganda from the Cold War.
