A 28-year-old Democratic Socialist just ousted a powerful, 10-term congressman in New York
This is interesting. Joe Crowley got bested by a 28-year old Latina in her first political campaign. Move over "white people"! The Hispanics are taking over the Democrats? She was a Bernie Sanders supporter. It's interesting to see in view of Nancy Pelosi and Diane Feinstein staying on when they are clearly beginning to lose their marbles. In the absence of a more controlled farm team, the Democrats are looking at inexperienced socialists.

This is only a primary, so there is no guarantee that she wins the general election, or even that Joe Crowley doesn't run independent. However, it does show that the "blue wave" isn't what they were hoping it would be.

She was a Bernie Sanders supporter, and the people want more people like that, and not the old establishment Democrats. There is nothing surprising about this. Good for her.

It's too soon to predict what will happen. The Democrats, however, are finally listening to the people, however.

It's a real surprise to the establishment: Young Progressive Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Topples Old Boss Joe Crowley in Democratic Primary Shocker
In one of the most shocking upsets in recent political history, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez toppled Rep. Joe Crowley in New York’s 14th Congressional District on Tuesday night. And it wasn’t even close. With 83 percent of precincts reporting, Ocasio-Cortez led by over 15 points.

The result, which immediately drew comparisons to the 2014 defeat of Eric Cantor by Rep. David Brat in Virginia, helped solidify the notion that challengers from the left can actually compete in Democratic primaries.

Looks like the Democratic leadership is facing their own version of a Tea Party. :D It's great news.

She wants to abolish ICE, legalize drugs, guarantee employment, free health care, transition to a 100% "green" economy and so-on. I think the Dems have to let this stuff air and there's going to be a real meltdown when it plays out.

Her mother is Puerto Rican, so she's the young J Lo in politics. :D

I'd rather bet this is good for the Dems, the old crooks should leave.

I can see how that is very humorous, but it may have a serious point. I don’t think the average American has changed so much that they are not offended by the Dems barrage of insults to Trump. The fact their followers would go full Socialist to reject them is also ambiguous. Do they want Socialism or will they simply accept it rather than supporting what is going on?

It's a stupid comment from Trump and I wonder if he can expect more respect from Ocasio-Cortez than he got from Crowley. I'm not sure if people in the Bronx want socialism indeed, they just may be grateful if someone really cares about them.

Beren wrote:Of course she would, unlike Crowley Ocasio-Cortez is the complete opposite of Trump.

So what was your point then?

This is actually bad news for the Dems, anyone openly claiming to be a socialist and likely supporting other SJW extreme points (like transgender baths, etc), is going to get annihilated against almost any Republican they go up against.

Beren wrote:There was no Republican primary, so I wonder if they believe they have a chance.

So who will she run against in the general?

Lets say there is no Republican challenge and she has secured the seat, all that means is that other extreme leftists will run and possibly upend more moderate incumbents elsewhere that will then have to go toe-to-toe with Republicans. Either way the point is the same, The Democrat party moving to the left is a bad idea for its electoral viability.

Hell, even the Democrat party of the last 5-10 years has been too radical for most Americans which is why they have lost such unprecedented power in every echelon of government.

Going to the left might actually drive a stake through the party's heart. Not kidding.

Dems should have serious concerns about this trend.

I know controlling zeal is difficult, but it is zeal that drives planes head-long into the side of warships.

If they want a millennial-lead Democratic party flying face-first into kamikaze glory while the Clintonians commit Seppeku on Orgy island, all they have to do is sit-back and let this Bernie revolution continue its present course. This is especially dangerous with the media being as distasteful in mouths of the American populace, which was their last real defense in spite of losses prior to 2016. They don't even have that recourse anymore. They're in serious trouble.
