and a budget surplus of $21,400,000,000 for 2019. I believe your trump of God is spending around $1,000,000,000,000 more than he is taking in for 2019 alone. That stinks. the mantle of fiscal responsibility has clearly passed from the Republicans to the Democrats (the Democrats also suck but, now, the Republicans suck more.). Obese Donald will have to diverge from his usual business model of over spending like a sailor and declaring bankruptcy thereby leaving all the suckers and losers holding the bag to a new model that ends in a national bust/depression.

If they really have all that surplus in cash, why don't they spend some of it to do something about the surplus of homelessness in the state?

Homeless Crisis: Los Angeles Looks To Governor To Declare State Of Emergency
Tuesday, October 1, 2019

Los Angeles officials are calling for a state of emergency as California continues to face the largest homeless crisis in the country. County supervisors believe the city is long overdue for a solution, and are urging California Governor Gavin Newsom to follow through on an initiative to control what’s become a growing epidemic.

“Apparently there’s something like 60,000 people who were displaced in the Bahamas,” said Board of Supervisors member Janice Hahn. “We have 60,000 people every night sleeping on our streets, yet we don’t have that sense of urgency.”

This comes after Governor Newsom announced plans back in May to devote billions of dollars toward homeless programs.

Los Angeles County has seen its homeless population skyrocket 12 percent over the last year. City Council members are now pushing for more state and federal funding after devoting millions of dollars to combat homelessness did not suffice as a long-term solution.

President Trump also weighed in on the issue while campaigning in Iowa in June. The president criticized California’s Democrat leaders for their handling of the homeless crisis.

“The Democratic run cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco — do you see what’s happening to those cities?” he asked. “People are getting sick just by walking down the street.”

@Hindsite ; I am seriously beginning to wonder if there's something wrong going on here. Socialism (for the millionth time :knife: ) is public ownership of the economic means of production in a Society. If what you're talking about isn't that, than it isn't Socialism.

When you write things to people, one should try to be honest and informative. Calling this Liberal crappola ''Socialism'' is total nonsense.

I know that, but I'm referring to socialist polices that eventually lead to complete socialism like what you state. It doesn't start out with complete socialism in the beginning. It is a a process that results form more and more socialist programs until it is complete socialism that meets your definition.

The climate change problem does present a serious challenge to capitalism in certain ways.

Capitalism is inherently unsuitable for resolving the issue, since it deals with what people want and not what people need. I can go out right now and buy an assortment of alcohol, marijuana, junk food, and cigarettes. I cannot, however, get the homeless people in my neighbourhood the shelter and decent food and clean water they need to be healthy. That is not available at any time.

Nor can I buy a solution for climate change. The solutions we have are, at best, ways of reducing a negative impact. And even those are not being mandated because they would drive down demand and that is not good for the economy.

So, either capitalism has to radically change to resolve these inherent contradictions, or we may need to move to a different economic model.

Capitalism can indeed solve all those problems with the right people that are not restricted by too many socialist policies. The majority of the homelessness in the USA are in areas governed by liberal democrats using restrictive regulations on capitalism and favoring socialist programs. There is no incentive to invent and innovate under socialism.

@Hindsite ;

I know that, but I'm referring to socialist polices that eventually lead to complete socialism like what you state.

But that is precisely what you don't understand; these policies are anything but Socialist, they're anti-Socialist, designed to prevent the working people from turning to Socialism as an answer. It's bribery of the poor by the rich, but paid for by the middle class, so the rich can stay rich. They will never 'lead to Socialism' and they're never intended to either.

It doesn't start out with complete socialism in the beginning.

Socialism isn't that sort of thing, it has to do with public or private ownership of the means of production. Say I own a tire factory, for example, that employs 500 people. If the government nationalized my business and made my employees the new owners collectively and I stayed on in an administrative function, that would be an example of a transition to Socialism. Seriously, anything else not like my example, isn't Socialism nor will it ever lead to Socialism. You've got to understand that Socialists dislike Liberal policies and politics even less than you do, if anything, for very good reasons.

It is a a process that results form more and more socialist programs until it is complete socialism that meets your definition.

A example of a gradual Socialism that goes like my earlier example I used except over a period of time is Fabian Socialism/Reformist Socialism, but again, nothing in America is Socialist, at all, period. And nothing you've ever talked about as ''Socialist'' ever is. When you see every business turn into a Co-Op, then we can start talking about Socialism as being real in America.

I agree that what is happening by many of the Democrat presidential is bribery to get votes. But you apparently don't understand what is happening in left-wing governments, like in California.

Medicare and Medicaid are two social insurance programs for two different groups run by the government.

Left-wing Democrats running for President want the government to take over healthcare for all. That will make healthcare coverage completely socialist. That is just one example of how it leads to socialism as the government controls more and more of our lives as they take away our options since the doctors, nurses, and all employees in hospitals get paid by the government, which means government control. That is socialism. That is why I will be voting against those candidates and the whole Democrat party.

History of the socialist movement in the United States

Socialism in the United States has been composed of many tendencies, often in important disagreements with each other as it has included utopian socialists, social democrats, democratic socialists, communists, Trotskyists and anarchists. The socialist movement in the United States has historically been relatively weak. Unlike socialist parties in Europe, Canada and Oceania, a major social democratic party never materialized in the United States and the socialist movement remains marginal, "almost unique in its powerlessness among the Western democracies".

In November 2013, Socialist Alternative (SA) candidate Kshama Sawant was elected to Position 2 of the Seattle City Council. Sawant was the first socialist on the council in recent memory. Philip Locker, a national organizer for SA, says it "was a watershed moment for the socialist movement across the country".

Bernie Sanders, current Senator from Vermont and 2020 candidate for President, describes himself as a democratic socialist. Sanders served as the at-large representative for the state of Vermont before being elected to the Senate in 2006. In a 2013 interview with Politico, radio host Thom Hartmann, whose nationally syndicated radio show draws 2.75 million listeners a week, affirmed his position as a democratic socialist. Sanders has been credited with reviving the American socialist movement by bringing it into the mainstream public view for the 2016 presidential election. With the election of Donald Trump, the DSA soared to 25,000 dues-paying members and SA at least 30 percent. Some DSA members had emerged in local races in states like Illinois and Georgia. Subscribers to the socialist quarterly magazine Jacobin doubled in four months following the election to 30,000.

According to a November 2017 YouGov poll, a majority of Americans aged 21 to 29 prefer socialism to capitalism and believe that the American economic system is working against them. In the same month, 15 members of the DSA were elected to various local and state governmental positions around the country in the 2017 elections.

In June 2018, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the DSA, won the Democratic primary in New York's 14th congressional district, defeating the incumbent Democratic Caucus Chair Joe Crowley in what was described as the biggest upset victory of the 2018 midterm-election season. She was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018.

According to Gallup, socialism has gained popularity within the Democratic Party. As of 2018, 57% of Democratic-leaning respondents viewed socialism positively as opposed to 53% in 2016. The perception of capitalism among Democratic-leaning voters has also seen a decline since the 2016 presidential election from 56% to 47%. 16% of Republican-leaning voters and 37% of American adults overall had a positive view of socialism in the 2018 poll, compared with 71% and 56% holding a positive view of capitalism, respectively.[263] A 2019 Harris Poll found that socialism is more popular with women than men, with 55% of women between the ages of 18 and 54 preferring to live in a socialist society. A majority of men surveyed in the poll chose capitalism over socialism.[

On April 2, 2019, four members of the DSA won run-off elections in Chicago while two others retained or won their seat in the February election, bringing the total number to six socialists on the council. Socialists control twelve percent of Chicago's city council power which Jacobin managing editor Micah Uetricht states in The Guardian that it is further evidence of a "socialist surge" in the United States and "the largest socialist electoral victory in modern American history".

When I read this, and see you post nonsense implying Medicaid and Medicare are ''Socialist'', instead of government run insurance programs paid for by the very population that uses them, I hardly know what to say. Most of the rest of what you posted is literally election year garbage of calling Liberals ''Socialists'' when again, you cannot see that they're anything but Socialists. Just as with other matters, you're impervious to information shared by others to you, and when you're clearly wrong, continue writing the same low-information tripe you always do.

Clearly, anything run for the public by the US government is ''Socialist'' to you except maybe the US Military, so there's no use arguing with you.

I used to believe as you do. I even argued with Driee that food stamps, Medicare, Medicaid were appropriate safety nets for the unfortunate in a capitalist society. I argued with Driee that under socialism, the state owns the means of production and attempts to direct economic activity towards politically identified goals.

Driee argued that socialist programs in which the government takes tax money from the people to pay farmers not to grow certain crops was to obtain a politically identified goal. And that using tax payers money for such things as welfare payments, food stamps, Medicare, Medicaid, building roads, power grids, bridges, waterways are classically socialist stuff.

Once I had more times to think about it and realized the high popularity of Democratic Socialist Bernie Sanders and AOC, who even say they want to make or government socialist, I began to understand the growing danger to our capitalist republic to turn from capitalism to socialism, as the major Democrats running for president tried to see who could run further to the left.

You're flipping your script, and no more ''Praise the Lord'' this time from you... Of course you do know that pretty much any human society runs things in light of politically identifiable goals, unless it's the anti-society of an Anarchist's utopia. All this just goes to show that Socialism is just part of a continuum politically between the poles of Civic Altruism and Antisocial Egoism.

I am okay with a few socialist programs used as safety nets because at 75 years of age, I receive social security payments and Medicare. I will just have to vote against these socialist candidates in an attempt to prevent them from going too far. Christian capitalism is the best.
