House Democrats have given the Internal Revenue Service a new deadline to hand over President Donald Trump's tax returns days after Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said his department would miss the original deadline of April 10.

In a letter to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig sent Saturday by Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass., Democrats gave a second and final deadline of April 23 for six years of Trump's personal and business tax returns. The lawmakers could go to court to seek the returns if the IRS does not turn them over.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Saturday he could not commit to meeting Democrats' new April 23 deadline for turning over President Donald Trump's tax returns to them, adding that he wanted to keep the Internal Revenue Service from being "weaponized" for political gain.

Central to this request is whether it is supported by law. 26 U.S. Code § 6103 (f), 1924, comes into play here. Fram a reading of it, there will be a need for some curious juggling of logic to disavow it. I suggest that, as with so many topics, statements by the White House personnel and President of the United States Donald Trump should be not be considered based in law [Ed.: Or in fact.].

I agree with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin's view that the IRS should not be ""weaponized" for political gain" regardless of any law. Requesting Trump's tax returns is obviously not for legitimate Congressional oversight of the IRS under the law, but an excuse for another fishing expedition into Trump's private and business affairs by the Democrats in the hope of political gain.

Using FISA courts as authorization to spy on an opposing campaign for political gain should not be allowed either.

Hindsite: Sir, in response, I doubt that any person with the ability to review the news of the day critically accepts, prima facie, any statement from the current 'White House'. That, however, differs from statements made by President of the United States of America Donald Trump. Those should be examined one by one for veracity and import. They carry the weight of the office he holds.

As to the law cited, it says what it says. In odd moments we Americans like to think of ourselves as a people governed by the 'rule of law', though that's often questionable.

Regards.
