America has been staging a “fascinating political-science experiment” for the past few months,The question being tested: how far can an “uninspiring” political candidate get if they have an essentially unlimited war chest? two weeks ago, we got the answer: “Not very far at all!” Former New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg spent more than half a billion dollars on his three-month campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, hiring an army of staff and deluging the airwaves with adverts. Yet after all that, he failed to win a single state in last week’s Super Tuesday contests, leading him to bow out of the contest. His only victory was in the tiny territory of American Samoa, where wall-to-wall ads and seven full-time staff helped him win 49.9% of the vote, or 175 actual votes. The Bloomberg run was “the most expensive failure in American political history”.

Sorry, that's going to be Trump.

But you could say something like it being the most expensive joke in American political history. Back in the day he would have been a Rockefeller Republican.

I agree that Bloomberg's campaign is less of a failure, as getting candidacy might not be Bloomberg's objective at the first place.

If viewed from anti-Trumpers, Trump's rise is undobtedly a bigger failure. However, the Democrats, who in allowing Hilary go through (which seemed to have alienated their supporters), and some of their supporters (who did not come out to vote and let Trump winning key states), probably contributed more in Trump's rise than either Trump or Putin.
