First Nations leaders in Ontario are condemning a court decision that reduced the charges against the man accused of throwing a trailer hitch from a moving car at Barbara Kentner in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Kentner died less than six months later.

Last week, the Crown filed a new indictment against Brayden Bushby, 20, who had been charged with second-degree murder in Kentner's death. Bushby will now stand trial for manslaughter and aggravated assault.

Barbara Kentner, 34, required surgery after being hit in the abdomen by the trailer hitch while walking home on Jan. 29, 2017. Her sister, Melissa Kentner, told CBC News that Barbara never recovered from her injuries. She died on July 4, 2017....

Canada is full of hick towns like Thunder Bay, places that were created by corporations looking to exploit resources. The local First Nations were repressed and isolated so that damaged refugees from Europe could be used to raze the forests and "get er done" by whatever means necessary.

Having very little education is a huge plus in situations like this. I hope Godstud jumps into this thread to defend Canada, and to prove how very different it is from Trumpland-Bidenworld-Goldman Sachsville.

Nobody can say that Canadians don't have a sense of humor.

THUNDER BAY, Ont. — Two friends who were with a man when he threw a trailer hitch at an Indigenous woman in Thunder Bay, Ont., have told a court he was drunk at the time and laughed immediately after the incident.

The testimony that was delivered at a 2018 preliminary hearing has been entered into evidence at the trial of Brayden Bushby, which began yesterday.

I read a few articles on it and it looks like the victim died of end stage liver disease 6 months after the attack. The prosecution dropped the murder charge because there's no way to meet the required standard of proof for a conviction. That being said, I think if some little shit throws a hunk of metal out a car window at some random pedestrian that little shit should go to prison for a very long time regardless of the injuries.

I don't know how it works in Canada but here in the US the tribal courts routinely let serious violent offenders off with ridiculously light sentences. Drunk driving vehicular homicides get like 6 months and probation, rapes are covered up, pedophiles get counseling, and these are crimes against other natives. Tribal court is a joke, victims don't get justice in tribal court, so I'll bet the "Grand Chief" is a total fucking hypocrite who would be defending the decision to drop the murder charge if it was a native kid accused of hitting a white girl with a trailer hitch.

With a place as progressive as Canada, I'm going to be very skeptical about claims of institutional racism. While I think the attack was racist, but just because a charge is reduced doesn't prove that the court did so because of racism. It's much more likely that the prosecutor thought the lesser charges would be easier to get a conviction on. It's politics being put over humanity, not contempt for the Natives, and I think there are plenty of ethically dubious by non-racist charge reductions that don't get as much media attention. I would be more likely to entertain this claim if it were the 1940s or 50s.

Pants-of-dog wrote:In Canada, racism against indigenous people is still rampant. From a practical perspective, you will rarely get charged if you kill an indigenous women.

Respectfully, I'm going to need more proof than this. I doubt whites still have de facto carte blanche to kill natives in the modern day. If you're talking about the colonial era to even the late 20th century, then I believe you, but not today.

The PM (that is the Prime Minister, the head of government) recently admitted that Canada is guilty of genocide against indigenous people. Note the use of the present tense.

you implied that the chief who pointed out the systemic racism was corrupt

He's engaing in blatant race baiting. When he says "It is difficult to believe there is not a racial component to this decision" that's just total racializing bullshit. Not only did the woman die 6 months later of unrelated causes, she also left the hospital against medical advice right after undergoing surgery for her injuries from the attack. Based on that it's difficult to believe the decision had anything to do with race at all and had everything to do with the impossibility of getting a conviction on 2nd degree murder given the facts. The Grand Chief is grandstanding with bogus racism accusations.

@Sivad

It is logically possible for the decision to be based on racism despite those factors. Especially when we consider the systemic racism in Canada against indigenous people.

Blaming the targets of racism for supposedly racialising the situation is to ignore (and therefore tacitly support) that racism.

You do not even know the name of the person you are accusing of racialisation, so I doubt you have evidence for your ad hominem. The racist meme of corrupt chiefs is not evidence, by the way. It is simply a racist meme.

Well I guess if your wokejob PM says it, it must be true.

I don't think anyone is disputing that there's idiots claiming genocide, the dispute is over whether the facts support a conclusion of genocide.

Respectfully, listen to Pants-of-dog. Women have simply not received the support police should have given FN women, not in time, nor in funding appropriate investigation. Men fare poorly too. Social workers are (universally) in short supply. There are reservations that cant supply people with clean water. Here. In Canada. It's a disgrace

I don't doubt any of that but how does it add up to genocide?

While spreading their cruel power across central America, the indigenous Aztec empire murdered countless other indigenous people by doing wonderful things like ripping their hearts out of their chest while they were still alive.

Sometimes people, especially those with power, are a-holes, including this white dude with a hitch, and white people who conquered the Americas, and the RCMP.

Sudbury is a hick-town, as are most native reserves. In these poor areas, like virtually all other poor areas, people murder each other at rates higher than most places in Canada. Poverty leads to uneducated and desperate people (and vice versa), and uneducated and desperate people kill, rape, and steal at high rates.

@Pants-of-dog Is correct. Canada does have institutional racism, but it's directed at the Aboriginal/First Nation people. :*(
