Stacy Abrams: "Jim Crow in a Suit and Tie"

I have been watching the news very carefully at republicans efforts to deny people the right to vote. They are doing so by passing racist laws that target black voters and laws that target democrat voters. These laws are aimed at denying the right to vote to non-republican and most non-whites. Stacy Abrams here in the state of Georgia has referred to his as "Jim Crow in a Suit and Tie." A CNN article talks about Stacy Abrams warning and the threat that republicans pose to freedom, democracy and the right to vote.

Stephen Collinson of CNN wrote:Stacey Abrams' stark warning about Georgia's new election bill being racist is shining a spotlight on a nationwide battle over whose voices will be heard at the ballot box, as Republicans around the country try to suppress voting rights.

The Georgia Democrat's comments on CNN Sunday come amid a building showdown over GOP efforts to make voting harder in multiple states following former President Donald Trump's loss and his lies about ballot fraud, and Washington Democrats' vast federal election and civil rights bill that would counter such efforts. Flurries of bills have been introduced in the key battleground states that decided the 2020 election and were the focus of Trump's attempts to undermine it, but Republicans are also ramping up in Texas and other strongholds that Democrats have lately tried to challenge.

The only way republicans think they can win an election without changing their ideas and competing with democrats based on ideas or policy is by denying eligible people the right to vote:

Denying The Right to Vote

The republicans might as well just come out and say "We don't believe in freedom and democracy, we want to establish an unchecked dictatorship and tyranny over the American people where the American people have no say so or voice." This, as democrats, we will fight against. We will fight for our freedom and our right to vote. The republicans should expect us to fight them and stop them from crushing freedom and democracy in America.

If the republicans want to win an election then come up with better ideas that better serve the American people than the democrats and you might win an election. However, if the republicans go down the path of denying people the right to vote to get into or stay in power, we will fight them and they will face serious resistance. The republicans need to learn that they cannot permanently suppress the right of people to live in freedom and people will fight them and resist them when they try. We will not accept tyranny and oppression.

I think the video makes clear which eligible voters republicans are trying to deny their right to vote. Did you watch the video?

yes I want you to give me specifics, you are making wild claims here. The video is 3 minutes, and is obviously not impartial.
So please give me specifics how this law will target Blacks?

If you have been paying attention, this isn't anything new that the republicans have been trying to do. Republicans know they can't win an election fair and square based on their current ideas and policy and so resort to denying people the right to vote to stay in power. Which makes those republicans illegitimate when the basis of any election victory they achieve is through voter suppression (ie denying people the right to vote). It's no different than what any tyrannical dictator does. If the republicans want to be legitimately elected, then let's have honest, free and fair elections that do not involve laws that suppress the right for eligible voters to vote.

After all, what are the republicans afraid of? Don't they believe in their ideas and think their ideas will really work to serve ALL the American people? Or are they afraid they will get beat in a fair and square election which is not based on voter suppression and denying eligible non-whites and democrats the right to vote? Those laws listed in the video specifically target legal and eligible non-white and democrat voters so they can win what I would regard as a "rigged election." Republicans seek to rig an election via voter suppression rather than participating in a fair and square election.

This sort of thing is why Plato made clear that an educated populace is needed to make democracy work, otherwise it will devolve and arise into a tyrannical dictatorship. An uneducated populace participating in democracy is more susceptible into being tricked and manipulated and lulled into a false sense of security which eventually lead to such dictatorships and the destruction of democracy. He was right. I am not fooled by these republican attempts to crush freedom and democracy here in the United States in an attempt to keep power no matter what or at any cost.

Amen to that late. The republican party has demonstrated with the rise of Trump, Trumpism and it's current effort of voter suppression that they don't want a republic but instead want a white supremacist dictatorship. You see, the republican party is the party of white supremacy and dictatorship.

So you have no evidence to back up your wild accusations? Only talking points, and opinions.

There is plenty of evidence there, you just choose to ignore it or pretend it's not there because you find truth and reality inconvenient.

It appears that some left leaning groups are preparing to fight republican actions:

Sara Murray of CNN wrote:Two left-leaning groups are teaming up to pour $30 million into an effort to persuade US senators to pass a sweeping voting rights bill that would counter efforts by state GOP lawmakers to restrict voting access.

The plan from End Citizens United/Let America Vote and the National Democratic Redistricting Committee is to spend $20 million on a television and digital advertising campaign and $10 million on a grassroots effort to try to get the legislation passed.

"Our goal is to get support to pass this bill and to show members of the Senate that their constituents believe this is a bill that just has to pass," said Adam Bozzi, vice president of communications for End Citizens United/Let America Vote.

The bill, which passed the Democrat-led House earlier this month, would expand voting access as well as improve transparency and accountability in Washington. But it comes as GOP-led state legislatures across the country have introduced efforts to curtail voting rights.

The legislation's fate has also become entangled with the fate of the filibuster in the US Senate.

Bozzi said the groups' efforts will target Democrats as well as Republicans, but he reiterated that their end goal is to ensure the bill is passed whether or not it garners bipartisan support.

First thing oppressors like the republicans like to do is to wage war on your mind. If they can keep you ignorant, they got you. They can control you and they can pass laws that control you. So, the first step towards freedom is to free your mind of ignorance with education. This is why slave owners and the powerful elite sought to deny education to slaves, black people and poor whites. They don't want black people and those who would likely vote democrat to free their minds. They especially don't want republicans who vote from them to free their minds either. They want to keep them in ignorance so they can continue their policy of oppression by denying people the right to vote. They can only get away with it when people live in blissful ignorance and choose to do nothing about it.

Freedom and democracy is something you have to fight for and earn. People will take it away from you if you let them. Once you have democracy and the vote, you have to constantly fight to keep it and that means staying well educated and informed. In order for a democracy to not devolve into a tyrannical dictatorship is that the population must be well educated. If the population is ignorant, like republicans like for them to be, then it's easier for them to take away the right to vote and to establish an unchecked tyrannical dictatorship that assures them absolute power and privilege at our expense. We all know that the unchecked absolute power that republicans want corrupts absolutely. They are not interested in freedom or democracy or the right to vote.

They are interested in power and privilege and for them to get it, they recognize they must wage war on the minds of people and the people foolish enough to vote for them. Get people to either vote for them or not vote at all either through apathy or voter suppression. Democracy and to keep democracy requires education, the willingness to continue to fight for it and the willingness to participate in it and not becoming apathetic. Otherwise you will lose it and it's blessings. You will be ruled by a dictatorship that will likely not respect your most basic and fundamental human rights or the right of your voice to be heard in the politics of the country.

Yes, I have voted for republicans in the past too, but here recently, starting with the election of Trump, I think the republicans have turned on our ideals and do not respect our government or constitution. They are trying to take away the right to vote from eligible voters with these new laws they are trying to pass. This makes me determined to be sure I participate in local and state politics and vote against every republican possible. This sort of nonsense can't stand. Republicans are going to have to learn that if they want to get elected then present a better policy and better ideas than the policy and ideas of the democrats that best serve the American people. They need to learn to compete on coming up with better ideas and better policy rather than trying to take away the right of eligible voters to vote.
