The seamy side of THAAD
One of the most urgent issues of the international agenda on the strategic stability for many years is the U.S. missile defense system frontline deployment.
As is known, in March 2017, the U.S. began to deploy elements of the THAAD complex on the territory of South Korea.The main reason of deployment was declared "the increasing nuclear missile threat from North Korea".
In turn, the DPRK carries on accusation the US of hegemony and regular strengtheningthe national nuclear deterrent forces.Despite the calls of the UN Security Council to immediately stop prohibited nuclear weapons tests, Pyongyang upholds its right to strengthen the defense of the country against the background of the hostile policy of Washington.
The permanent conflict on the Korean Peninsula causes damage not only to the DPRK and the ROK, but also the strategic interests of China in the security and economy spheres.According to a daily Chinese newspaper"HuanqiuShibao," Beijing expresses strong concern about the current situation on the Korean Peninsula.China expressed displeasure with the actions of DPRK and U.S.-ROK and the intention to actively uphold their interests, including through military means.On the one hand, Beijing has warned a Pyongyang to impose very strict sanctions, including a significant reduction of oil supplies if another DPRK’s nuclear test.On the other hand, the Chinese side took the following measures of economic pressure against the ROK:
• thebans (at least for the first quarter of 2017) on Korean charter flights in China and Chinese in the Republic of Korea;
• theincreasing the number of inspections of the South Korean companies, operating in China;
• the restrain on cultural cooperation of the broadcast of Korean movies and TV shows as well as concerts; the advertising contracts with Korean pop stars and movies gradually become invalid;
• thegrowth of non-tariff barriers and the imposition of new rules for the sale of Korean products.
Thus, from the foregoing can conclude that the true purpose of deployment the US missile defense system in RK may in fact be aimed at undermining regional stability, primarily collision of Chinese, the DPRK and the ROK’s interests.
