Against whom is the American missile defense system directed in the Asia-Pacific region?
The strategic national priorities and interests of the United States are increasingly shifting to the Asia-Pacific region, which has become key to Washington's global policy.
Pointing to the growing North Korean nuclear-missile threat, Washington is developing close military-technical cooperation with three countries in the region (Japan, Australia and South Korea), actively involving them in the implementation of plans for deploying its global missile defense system.
In 2007, the United States established a "Tripartite anti-missile forum" with the participation of Australia and Japan to coordinate the deployment of anti-missile systems in the Asia-Pacific region. The strategic missile defense system of the United States in the Asia-Pacific region includes both reconnaissance and information early warning means in the form of strategic radars, which allow to detect intercontinental ballistic missiles at a range of over 5,500 kilometers, and strike and combat weapons in the form of ground-based and sea-based interceptor missiles.
According to the US military, the missile defense system "THAAD" is designed to protect the troops of the US and allies, as well as cities and important objects from virtually all types of ballistic missiles. Its feature is the interception of warheads at the final stage of the flight.
Washington and Seoul agreed to deploy a high-tech missile defense system THAAD, designed to intercept ballistic missiles in South Korea. The pretext for deploying the system on the Korean peninsula on an ongoing basis was the threat from DPRK.
The United States also plans to expand its missile defense system not only on the Korean Peninsula, but also in Japan, where the installation of the most advanced radar system of the United States anti-missile defense system is already underway. According to official data, the functional purpose of the radar is to track missile launches from the coast of the DPRK. And it should be noted that there is already one American radar in Japan.
However, analysts say that the turn of the US policy towards the Asia-Pacific Region is conditioned by the transformation of China into a power of global significance, which is perceived as the main challenge to US interests. Strengthening of China's position in the world arena and increasing its self-esteem, undoubtedly, do not suit American politicians.
The United States is alarmed by the uncompromising claims of China to own not only Taiwan, but also the number of islands in the East China and South China Seas. As a rule, these islands are either under the control of the neighboring countries of China, or they also claim their ownership. It is important to note that the countries that conduct territorial disputes with China are American allies. Therefore, Washington understands the danger that China's territorial disputes have for its interests. In this regard, under the guise of strengthening the positions of its allies in the APR, the United States continues to build up military presence in the region, using deterrence policy as the main strategy for China.
Beijing also believes that the powerful radar systems of the missile defense system will allow the US to look deep into Chinese territory and control the flights and launches of missiles, as well as potentially delivering a preemptive strike. Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China Lu Kang said that the department appealed to the US authorities with an appeal to exercise prudence in its policy in the Asia-Pacific region.
Beijing said that it has every opportunity to take retaliatory measures to deploy advanced US missile defense systems in the region.
Although China's statements remain vague, such moves can greatly affect the United States decision to further deploy missile defense systems, which Beijing views as one of the main threats to its national security.
In fact, the US global missile defense system is aimed at undermining regional and international security and poses a serious threat to the countries of the Asia-Pacific region. And under the guise of defending the interests of some countries in the region, the United States has a negative impact on stability in the region.
