The protest to the governments of Japan and the United States was expressed by the authorities of the southern Japanese prefecture of Okinawa. The protest occurred regarding the continuation of US MV-22 Osprey flights after the accident of one of the aircraft near the Australia coast. On August 28, 2017, the administration of the prefecture adopted a resolution.
The resolution says that residents are afraid of incidents with converters, and there is a demand to stop the operation of the US Marine Corps air base in Futenma, where these aircrafts are deployed, until February 2019. Parliamentarians point out that the Futenma base is in the center of the densely populated city of Ginowan and residents fear for their safety.
The protests of the Okinawa residents against the flights of Osprey in recent times are regular. On December 22, 2016, about 4.2 thousand people took part in a protest rally in the city of Naga against the flights of MV-22 Osprey, one of which collapsed shortly before that at sea during a training flight. On July 22 of the same year, Okinawa residents met with protest continuation of the construction of helipads for the US armed forces. They erected barricades that hinder the construction of six helipads in the Takae area.
The MV-22 Osprey was crashed near the Australia coast on August 5. On its board were 26 people, 23 were rescued, three died. Deployment of the MV-22 Osprey in Okinawa has been causing discontent and protests among the population for several years. There are regular problems with them. In 2012, this aircraft crashed in Florida and Morocco. In 2016, the incident occurred in the Persian Gulf zone, at that time the infantryman died.
The main part of the US military facilities in Japan is located on Okinawa island, including the largest Air Force base outside the US. The island also has a Marine Corps division. In total, Okinawa has about 25,000 US troops, 18 percent of the island's territory is under the control of US infrastructure.
Residents regularly organize protest actions, demanding the withdrawal of military bases of the United States from Okinawa. Incidents with aircraft and helicopters occur regularly on the island and in its vicinity.
