Environmental security issues are increasingly raised in the areas of US military bases quartering in the territories of Japan and South Korea
Such bases as Atsugi and Misawa are located on the main Japanese islands. In total, 91 US facilities are located on Honshu, Kyushu and Okinawa. They occupy 78 thousand square kilometers, while the total area of these islands is 275 thousand square kilometers. US military bases inflict economic and environmental damage on Okinawa's infrastructure. Up to 20% of arable land is occupied by US military facilities, and almost all areas occupied by military installations have been forcibly taken from owners. Japan's ecosystem has suffered damage from conducting US military exercises. Farmland is being destroyed, fauna and flora are dying, many serious diseases are growing, and a high mortality of the population is observed, mainly from toxic substances in the areas located near the sites of these exercises. Some experts estimate the material damage inflicted by US troops over the past 70 years, almost 50 trillion dollars.
In the near future, the US military plans to move the "Futenma" base in Henoko. Protesters of the transfer of the base "Futenma" argue that construction works will cause irreparable damage to coral reefs in the area. American bases in Japan caused repeated criticism of local residents, marking the growth of environmental pollution in the locations of bases. Particularly wide resonance was caused by repeated cases of US chemical, biological and nuclear waste disposal in the Japanese territories, which entailed the destruction and contamination of flora and fauna.
The same problem is observed on the Korean peninsula. In connection with the deployment of US troops in the Republic of Korea over the past 10 years, the environmental situation associated with oil products contamination in the territory of the quartering of American bases has sharply escalated. Several South Korean non-governmental organizations dealing with environmental issues came to this conclusion. They prepared "Comprehensive report on damage to the environment at US military bases in Korea".
Nevertheless, according to the activists of the South Korean environmental organizations, the US military does not take the necessary measures to disinfect the territory. A large part (77%) of all infections types is caused by leakage of oil products. Land and water are contaminated. Residents of Seongju County, where US THAAD anti-missile systems are installed, are exposed to powerful electromagnetic radar radiation, which seriously damages their health. In addition to environmental, the presence of an American missile defense system in Korea carries another problem: a military escalation will lead to the undermining of peace talks between the Koreas. North Korea does not reconcile with the fact that the American THAAD appeared nearby. Thus, Washington provokes Pyongyang to respond, which threatens the security of the peninsula.
