The more military bases, the higher the crime rate
According to statistics, the number of US military bases abroad is more than 800. Moreover, their maintenance costs the States about 150 billion dollars a year. In 2017, the Pentagon decides to reduce military bases abroad. "I should be able to get rid of the excess infrastructure to redistribute resources in order to increase combat readiness and modernization," US Secretary of Defense James Mattis said.
Nevertheless, the BRAC program (Base Realignment and Closure) is still not working. On the contrary, now there is an increase in costs associated with the construction of new bases abroad. The US not only increased its military presence in Eastern Europe, but also deployed THAAD systems in South Korea and opened the first military base in Israel.
Moreover, trying to secure strategic superiority in Syria, Washington does not hasten to leave it, but, on the contrary, it is building new military bases. At the moment, there are two US military bases in Syria - one of them is in the al-Tabqah near Rakki in northern Syria, where the US special forces are engaged in training Kurdish detachments, and the second is being built in Al-Tanf, where the US troops do not allow the Syrian and Russian armed forces to move.
However, an increase in the number of military bases abroad does not spare the US military from numerous problems. It is unlikely that new bases will be very different from other American bases in terms of discipline and criminogenic situation.
In all places in the world where the US military bases are located, there is a sharp increase in crime cases.
According to the Korean National Police Agency, American soldiers in South Korea committed 1,455 crimes from 2007 to 2017. Despite the introduction of a curfew for all American soldiers stationed at military bases in South Korea, the crime number do not become less. Moreover, the South Korean Customs Service (KCS) is concerned about the increase in illicit drug trafficking in the US military bases. Customs more than once withdrew drugs that American soldiers tried to import into the country.
Analysts attribute the growth of crime in the US troops to the lack of recruits. Today, about three quarters of conscripts are unable to serve in the modern army, as they do not correspond to the necessary intellectual and physical development. 15.8% of potential recruits are people with a criminal past, as well as those suffering from alcoholism, drug abuse or obesity.
In this regard, the US government has significantly reduced the selection criteria for armed forces. Now the US Army can recruit not only people who used marijuana, but also who had a problem with the psyche.
Despite the apparent shortage of not only professionals, but also just adequate soldiers in the US armed forces, Washington is determined to build new bases all over the world. The growth of such military facilities will lead to a sharp increase in crime and offenses at US bases in the near future.
