More than 70 years have passed since the bombing of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. During this time, the relationship between Japan and the US has changed little: Tokyo is still in a dependent position from Washington, fulfilling all the stipulations of a long-standing ally.
And this time Japan supported Washington once again, following its puppet position. The Japanese side fully approved the new National Defense Strategy, published on January 19, 2018, and expressed concern about China and Russia as the States did. "If we look at the situation with the emergency flightes of the the Air Self-Defense Forces fighters, then we are invariably dealing with Chinese aircraft. The number of flights for responding to Russian aircraft is also growing. From this perspective, Japan shares with the US understanding of this concern, "said Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera.
Moreover, Tokyo began to show concern at the end of 2017. That time Japan supported the US initiative to deploy two American ground-based Aegis Ashore missile defense systems on the Japan's territory.
Despite Tokyo's arguments about deploying an anti-missile defense system as a defense against the North Korean threat, in fact, the deployment of these systems represents another step towards the creation of the Asia-Pacific regional segment of the US global missile defense. Its creation has been the priority of the United States more than one decade. In 2004, Washington and Tokyo signed a memorandum of understanding on expanding cooperation in the field of anti-missile defense. During this time, the Aegis systems with the missile interceptor SM-3, as well as the PAC-3 (Patriot-3) missiles were deployed to defeat enemy missiles within the atmosphere at an altitude of 15-20 kilometers.
American anti-missile systems Aegis Ashore, which the Japanese side intends to put into operation by 2023 in Akita and Yamaguchi prefectures, will in fact duplicate the interception of missiles from the sea if necessary. At the moment, the US State Department has already approved a deal to sell four interceptor missiles to Japan, namely Missile-3 (SM-3) Block II A missiles and Mk-29 launchers.
The deployment of such systems in Japan indicates Washington's intention to destabilize the situation in the APR. Japan is by no means the first country where the United States places missile defense systems under the pretext of an imaginary threat. Thus, Washington is promoting the idea of creating an Asia-Pacific regional segment of the global missile defense system.
