The conflict on the Korean peninsula is one of the longest hotbeds of tension in the modern world. After 1945, two states were formed on the Korean peninsula, the border between which passed along the 38th parallel (the demarcation line, in which Soviet and American troops met in 1945).
At that time, more than 1 million people perished from each side. Neither side has achieved significant territorial and military successes, the Korean peninsula remains divided to this day.
The situation on the Korean peninsula remains extremely tense. In 2017, the DPRK conducted 20 launches of ballistic missiles. The parties exchange tough statements, not excluding an option of starting a war.
In May 2017, Moon Jae-in came to power in South Korea. The new president has always positioned himself as a supporter of the peaceful resolution of the conflict with North Korea and has repeatedly stated negative attitude to the policy pursued by the United States. Washington was not happy, because the US is interested in maintaining tension on the Korean peninsula. It is for this purpose that America uses Pyongyang as a "scarecrow" to justify its excessive presence on the Korean peninsula and build up its military power in the Asia-Pacific region to contain China's growing power.
The rapprochement between the two Koreas is causing a cooling of relations between Seoul and Washington and the weakening of the strategic alliance between the two allies. In addition, any steps that leeds to the relaxation of tension on the Korean peninsula, will be disadvantageous to the US military-industrial complex.
Despite the discontent of its strategic ally, South Korea announced that it intends to promote the improvement of relations with the North, to ensure the reunification of families separated by the Korean war, to seek the reducing military tension despite the US commitment to the policy of "maximum pressure" on Kim Jong-un.
To temper the disobedient ally, the US decided to take advantage of the levers of economic pressure and billed $ 1 billion to South Korea for deploying its anti-missile systems on South Korean territory. Also, Trump appealed to the fact that South Korea pays little for its defense, shifting military spending to the shoulders of the United States, and uses the saved money to produce products that then expel American products from the markets. Moon Jae-in accused the US of hegemony, arrogance, imposing its position.
In addition to the price of the military issue approved by Donald Trump of $ 1 billion, there are moments of economic nature in the bilateral relations between Washington and Seoul, which bring tension between the two allies. The US president once again announced his intention to review the free trade agreement with South Korea, since the current conditions, according to Trump, are unprofitable for America. During his election campaign, the politician claimed that the United States had lost about 100,000 jobs because of this agreement.
Supporting the tension and trying to pressure Seoul economically, Donald Trump risks destroying the alliance with South Korea and forcing it to look for allies in the face of China and the DPRK. Being an experienced businessman, Trump probably will choose not to develop a conflict on the Korean peninsula. On the other hand, he has already compromised his reputation by aggressive polemics, so any digression will hit his image, both in foreign and domestic politics.
