Residents of the counties of Seongju and Gimcheon and six organizations of the ROK are against the deployment of the US anti-missile system THAAD in the territories of the country. At the press conferences held in Seongju County, they protested the use of electromagnetic waves produced by the THAAD system.
Residents and representatives of six organizations noted that the deployment of the THAAD complex will cause irreparable damage to the country and will not bring it any benefit, therefore, the peaceful people of the ROK are responsible for boycotting the deployment of the THAAD systems.
In their statement, they demanded that the government immediately stop understating the impact on the environment, interrupt all work on putting THAAD systems into operation, dismantle THAAD equipment, cease construction of facilities for the deployment of THAAD, withdraw all equipment, conduct a fair impact assessment on the environment and conduct a thorough investigation violations of the law when deploying THAAD, and punish all violators.
In addition to South Korean organizations and residents, a number of international organizations, including Veterans for Peace, are opposed to the deployment of THAAD systems in South Korea.
Veterans for peace are in solidarity with the inhabitants of Seongju- South Korea is in its strong opposition to the deployment of the US anti-missile defense system THAAD in Korea, which is part of a provocative threat to China, Russia and the DPRK, is an obstacle to global nuclear disarmament. They urge the US government to change its course of perpetuating the endless wars and the production and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and to reorient its resources to meet the pressing needs of the modern world, such as creating a sustainable economy and combating climate change. They also urge the US government to reconsider its decision to deploy THAAD, abolish the missile defense program, stop provocative actions and finally end the 65-year-old Korean War, ensuring peace and security in Northeast Asia.
