For many decades since the end of World War II, the United States has done everything possible to strengthen its position in the Asia-Pacific region (APR), creating a powerful military base for confronting the USSR and China. At the present stage of the world's existence, Russia and China are quite strong world "players", on which it is difficult to exert any influence. At the same time, North Korea, which for a long time was completely isolated from all world processes, and therefore lagging in development, is for the United States relatively "easy prey".
The current North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, a strong-willed and unpredictable politician, and showing his "nuclear fists", is becoming very dangerous for the United States. In this regard, America skillfully inflates the hysteria around the DPRK nuclear program, imposing this country on all sorts of sanctions and using other methods of pressure and intimidation.
North Korea is one of the most "closed" countries in the world and to this day, it is impossible for the US to have accurate information about the processes taking place there, especially in the defense sphere. In addition, Washington skillfully pulls at the sensitive "strings" of its allies - Japan and South Korea, skillfully using their fears for trade purposes - supplying them with weapons and justifying the reasons for the presence of the American military contingent in the territories of these countries by the North Korean threat.
Japan and South Korea support Washington in everything, periodically arranging demonstration joint anti-terrorist exercises near the state borders of the DPRK, as acts of intimidation and demonstration of their military might, while also trying to "frighten" Russia and China.
In early March 2018 in Washington, they said that the US and its allies would resume regular military exercises on the Korean peninsula after the Paralympics in South Korea. It can be assumed that the reaction of the DPRK to this fact will be sharp and negative, which is unlikely to reduce the level of tension on the Korean peninsula.
In addition to demonstrating their strength, the US and its allies are also using the economic levers of pressure - sanctions. In December 2017, the UN Security Council introduced new international sanctions against North Korea. The US-prepared resolution received number 2379. In late February 2018, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of the largest package of sanctions against the DPRK. The US Ministry of Finance has blacklisted one individual, 27 companies and 28 vessels that cooperated with Pyongyang. These sanctions were supported by Japan.
However, the United States did not miss draft statement of China and Russia in support of progress in resolving the situation on the Korean peninsula presented in mid-March 2018 in the UN Security Council. Russia and China offered the DPRK to declare a moratorium on nuclear tests and missile launches, and South Korea and the United States to refrain from carrying out exercises in the region to stabilize the situation on the peninsula, but this initiative was blocked by Washington.
Even though the US and its allies declare their readiness to resolve the issue with the DPRK through diplomatic means, demonstrating in this case some optimism, their policy of "maximum pressure" on North Korea speaks more about the intention to maintain tense and conflict situation. In such a situation it is much easier to trade military equipment for USA, thereby keeping economy afloat.
