For many years, diplomatic relations between Russia and Japan are complicated by the so-called "Kuril issue". Tokyo claims to islands in the southern part of the Kuril Ridge: Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomai archipelago, calling them Japanese "northern territories".
At present, despite the development of economic and cultural cooperation between the two countries, the Japanese leadership, hoping to regain the islands, is going to various actions.
Thus, the Japanese delegation led by the consul of this country in Vladivostok Katsai Tatsuhiko, being on an official visit to Kamchatka during the 51th festival of Japanese cinema from 22 to 24 March 2018, distributed brochures to Russian citizens. In this literature, rude claims are being made not only to the South Kuril Islands, but also to all Kuriles Islands and the southern half of the Russian island of Sakhalin. On the maps painted in the brochures, the islands of Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and the Habomai archipilago are painted in the color of Japan as belonging to it, and the remaining Kuriles and the southern half of Sakhalin are left uncovered as territories with supposedly undefined nationality.
And it should be noted that in 2017, the Japanese film festival was overshadowed by distribution of the Niponica magazine, which is being produced by the Japanese Foreign Ministry. On a map printed on pages of the magazine, the southern Kuril Islands were also marked as the territory of the Land of the Rising Sun. This year, printed products that outraged the public again appeared in Kamchatka.
Japanese delegation stayed in Kamchatka for several days, having spent a lot of meetings with officials and businessmen during this time. This delegation persistently distributed literature at the events of the film festival, on the territory of Kamchatka State University named after Vitus Bering. In addition, similar publications were sent by the Japanese to representatives of the border management and the Russian leadership in the region.
In connection with the distribution of propoganda materials in Kamchatka where the Kuril Islands are marked as Japanese territory, the RF Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky sent a note of protest to the Consul General of Japan in Vladivostok. It was suggested that such actions are unacceptable. The islands of the Kuril Ridge are an integral part of the Russian Federation and their status is unquestionable. They were asked not to distribute such materials in the territory of Russia from now on.
The unprecedented trick of the Japanese in Kamchatka caused resentment not only in the diplomatic circles of Russia, but also among ordinary citizens, who are indignant at Tokyo's attempts to rewrite the results of the Second World War in relation to the Kuril Islands.

Probably it was a historical map, showing territories from 1905 to 1945, and the brochure was meant to explain the historical background of the Kuril Islands dispute. Obviously, something was lost in translation. I think Chinese characters used in the brochure are like hieroglyphic writing for Russian analysts, completely incomprehensible.

Japan LOST WW2 for Pete's Sake. It's absolutely normal for the Soviets to claim some war loot.

Exactly. Or would the Imperial Japanese Fascists have preferred that the Red Army continue on to Hokkaido and Kyushyu after the Kurils?

The Niponica magazine is also available on the web and this is a screenshot from the latest issue which may have been distributed in Russia. It's a non-political map to advertise local cosmetics sold in Japan and the southern part of the Kurils is added to the map, which may have offended some Russians. However, all Japanese maps usually include the southern Kurils and there is nothing special about it.

Niponica is a web magazine that introduces modern Japan to people all over the world. Cover: A present-day Japanese woman in traditional bridal attire.

All islands in the Pacific region rightfully belong to the US. A few we allow others the illusion of control for now.
The Kurils are obviously just an offshoot of the Aleutians and therefore belong to us.

Russia was at war with Japan for less than 1 month, for gods sake. They just wanted a seat at the table and contributed zilch (regardless of what the current historical revisionists say.) They did try and claim Hokkaido too, but the US nixed that very resolutely.

It was the utter crushing defeat of the Japanese Kwantung Army in Manchuria and the Kurils islands by the Red Army, as much or more than the American Atomic Bombs, that forced the Imperial Japanese leadership to surrender. Anything said differently is the post-WWII media reflecting a Cold War bias. The Soviets claimed Hokkaido no doubt with the understanding that eventually the Japanese would try to be at it all over again, someday, but at the end of the day figured it wasn't worth the effort.

Nippon needs to leave the world alone, especially China and Korea. I think things worked out really badly for Nippon last time when Japan took the course it did in 1931 in China (the Marco Polo bridge incident) and thereafter.

Did I mention the revisionists? Japanese forces (still) in Manchuria (at less than 50% strength) were on half rations (if they had any at all.) They did little but retreat and/or surrender. Big whup!

Then, as now, they decided it wouldn't be worth it when they found they would have to fight (the US) for it. (Natasha didn't want the next A-bomb dropped in her lap.)

Russian generals have never been good for anything but sitting on their hands and machine gunning their own troops (motivational training.)

Japan has "left the world alone." Ever since WWII ended. They repudiated the militarist doctrine that began nearly a century ago. Since 1945 they have diligently pursued peace. After over 70 years their desire to contribute to policing the world and paying their fair share is to be commended. Their ability to do so responsibly, IMHO, is unquestionable.

Opposition from those opposed to free-world policy is to be expected.

What a load of crap. The Japanese had a good deal of the resources of Manchuria and Korea to draw upon, and were well motivated to defend their Colony of Manchuoko until they got struck with a good dose of military reality.

Then, as now, they decided it wouldn't be worth it when they found they would have to fight (the US) for it. (Natasha didn't want the next A-bomb dropped in her lap.)

The usual Jingoistic horseradish I had come to expect from you, three years ago. You haven't changed your schtick much, fact free and reality free as usual.

Russian generals have never been good for anything but sitting on their hands and machine gunning their own troops (motivational training.)

More BS, cooked up by the Fascist Axis and their present covert defenders, when their generals had to explain their utter destruction militarily to their allied captors in the West after the war, rationalizing their defeat. Some were not quite so dishonest, and more and more honest scholars debunk this stupid self serving myth.

I guess you don't know about Shinzo Abe and the crop of would be future militarists in his political circles, then. But this isn't all a mere analysis based just on persons, but peoples and their economics. A resurgence of a militarized and Imperialist Japan won't happen overnight, but it is happening.

You mean: "More and more" (paid) Russian trolls seek to dominate the internet and social media ? That's been established, we got'cha.

I blame this on Saeko ...

The Japanese thought the Russians were good friends because of the Japanese–Soviet Non-aggression Pact of 1941 and Hirohito even counted on Russia to end the war, intended to send a peace envoy to Moscow. But Japan was stabbed in the back as the Soviet forces captured the Kuril Islands based on the secret agreement reached at Yalta, by which the Soviet Union received the Kuril Islands and southern Sakhalin. Japan needs to accept this fact first before signing a peace treaty with Putin's Russia. The Yalta agreement bluntly stated, “The Kuril Islands shall be handed over to the Soviet Union.” President Roosevelt promised the ''Kurile Islands'' (undefined) at the Yalta Conference in return for Soviet entry into the war, thinking he was returning territory lost to Russia in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5. Stalin further asked the US if it was alright for the Soviets to capture Hokkaido but he received no for an answer from an American commander overseeing the northern theater of Japan, thus checking a further Soviet incursion into the American sphere of influence. Japan is still hosting 50,000 American troops along with approximately 40,000 dependents of military personnel, which makes almost impossible for Japan to militarize itself once again and take over Asia. The era of imperialism is over and there is no rationale for territorial expansion either for Britain or Japan today. Back then European or Japanese colonialism was a civilizing mission by which Korea and Taiwan were industrialized, except for Manchuria that was seized by far-right militarists inspired by the Nazis.
