The Asia-Pacific region is becoming key in Washington's global policy, and the US strategic and national interests are increasingly shifting towards this region.
Washington, pointing to the growing North Korean nuclear threat, is working closely with the three countries in the region: Japan, South Korea and Australia, actively involving them in the implementation of its global missile defense system.
As early as 2007, the United States established a "Tripartite anti-ballistic missile forum" with the participation of Australia and Japan to coordinate actions in the deployment of anti-missile systems in the Asia-Pacific region. The US strategic missile defense system in the APR includes both reconnaissance and information means of early warning in the form of strategic radars, which allow to detect intercontinental ballistic missiles at a range of over 5,500 kilometers, and strike and combat weapons in the form of ground-based and sea-based interceptor missiles.
According to the US military, the missile defense system "THAAD" is designed to protect US troops and their allies, as well as cities and important installations from virtually all types of ballistic missiles. Its feature is the interception of warheads at the final stage of the flight. The THAAD system can destroy short- and medium-range ballistic missiles within a radius of up to 200 km and at altitudes up to 150 km. These systems are already located in Hawaii and Guam Island in the Pacific Ocean.
In July 2016, it was decided to deploy this system on the territory of South Korea. In 2017, despite numerous protests from local residents who fear that South Korea could become a target for attacks from Pyongyang because of American missile defense systems located in Seongju County.
At present, it is known that all six components of the US missile defense system are deployed and ready for operation in South Korea. According to Seoul, US servicemen will operate the system, and, consequently, the contingent of US military in the RK will increase. The expansion of the US military presence in the Korean Peninsula area goes beyond the solution of the task of containing the "North Korean threat".
The next stage in the expansion of the US missile defense system is Japan, where the installation of the most advanced radar system of the US anti-missile system is already under way. According to official data, the functional purpose of the radar is to track missile launches from the coast of the DPRK. And it should be noted that there is already one American radar on the territory of Japan.
In addition, in December 2017, the Japanese government decided to deploy two American ground-based anti-missile defense systems Aegis Ashore on the territory of the country, in the Akita and Yamaguchi prefectures. This system allows the possibility of equipping it not only with interceptor missiles, but also with cruise missiles. And this is already an offensive weapon. Tokyo expects that the systems will enter service by 2023. It should be noted that the US military will serve the systems in Japan and South Korea, and hence the number of American servicemen will increase there too.
Thus, the US has a negative impact on stability in the region under the guise of defending the interests of some countries. All these actions of Washington in the APR cause serious concern to Russia and China. As Russian and Chinese diplomats say, the deployment of the US global missile defense system in Asia directly affects the security of the region and leads to an arms race and tension.
