For more than a decade, the US has been skillfully using the US-Japan-South Korea military alliance. Initially, this alliance was conceived as a way to control the Asian region, as a strategic lever to contain the DPRK, China and Russia. Subsequently, Washington planned to give this alliance the powers and functions of NATO to pursue a strategy of domination in the Asia-Pacific region, including in Northeast Asia. Now, despite talks with the DPRK and the pressure of Asian countries, Washington does not intend to reduce its military contingent in South Korea and keeps it "to ensure security in the region."
After the end of the Korean War in 1953, a large military contingent of the United States was sent to the peninsula. A few months after the end of the war, Seoul and Washington signed the Mutual Defense Treaty, which serves as the legal basis for the US military presence in South Korea. At present, there are 28.5 thousand American servicemen in South Korea. All this time their presence in the country was explained by the possible aggression of the DPRK. Now, in the event of a peace between North and South Korea, justifying the presence of a impressive group of US troops in the RK will be difficult.
Moreover, Washington and Seoul hold joint military exercises every year. From December 4 to December 8, 2017, Vigilant Ace exercises took place, in which more than 230 US and South Korean aircraft, including F-22 and F-35, took part. The parties worked out a scenario with point-based air strikes on the nuclear and missile sites of the DPRK.
However, it seems that the military cooperation between the two countries has noticeably decreased in the light of the recent events on the denuclearization of the DPRK. Nevertheless, according to experts, this is a temporary phenomenon. Washington is ready to make a number of concessions for the sake of the primary goal of nuclear disarmament of the DPRK. The joint military exercises of the United States and South Korea, the "Guardians of Freedom", as well as two trainings within the framework of the Korean Maritime Exchange Program, are also postponed indefinitely. A year ago, the joint military exercises of the two countries were an indispensable guarantor of the non-aggression of the DPRK. Now, Donald Trump describes them as costly and provocative "war games" that cost the States tens and hundreds of millions of dollars.
According to experts, such high-profile statements are made against the backdrop of negotiations with the DPRK and pursue the goal of a complete denuclearization of North Korea. This is the whole list of concessions to which Washington agrees. After the agreement of the two countries to eliminate the nuclear potential of the DPRK, Donald Trump extended sanctions against the DPRK for a year in accordance with the law "On International Emergency Economic Empowerment".
Therefore, we should expect the resumption of joint projects of Washington and Kazakhstan in the military sphere in the near future, especially since regardless of the results of the talks, the US does not intend to withdraw its military contingent from South Korea. The position of the Americans and South Koreans lies in the fact that the deployment of the US Armed Forces there serves as a guarantee of security for South Korea.
