[LKY (coward)]: We will be the best prostitutes in the world (because we can never own an MNC ourselves).
Minutes earlier in the interview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihiE4oGyYlQ&feature=youtu.be&t=23m19s , he said no way Singapore can become/have a big MNC like Ikea or Nokia, the former has good designers and natural wood, the latter a fluke that will be makan (eaten up by Japan and S Korea MNC). So besides 'rule of law, good governance' etc he says MNCs will choose between Singapore and Vietnam, the costs of manufacturing in Vietnam being lower in Vietnam than Singapore, so MNCs will choose Vietnam unless Singapore has infrastructure and labour worth the cost that MNC are willing to work out.
After I hear out LKY, I feel very dissappoited with LKY who just doesn't realize how lucky he was and how much of a fluke Singapore is. Fluke as in because Singapore chose USA capitalism vs USSR/China that Vietnam did, thus MNC chose Singapore over Vietnam and China because the communist states were mired in all the bloodshed that typical communist states of that era faced: rule by barrel of gun, revolutions etc (USSR broke up), but Singapore was more peaceful because real elections were held and thus real egalitarian ideas were implemented (e.g. confiscation of underutilized private land to build HDB flats for the poor). Now that Vietnam and other ex-communist states (e.g. Myanmar) copy and embrace democracy/capitalism, all is saying is that we will be "smarter", "better infrastructure" than Vietnam so MNC will pay premium to manufucture/ operate from Singapore...
LKY has bitten the hand that feeds him and slaughtered the 'golden goose' that led the Singapore economy out of "mudflats, swamp" to become a cosmopolitan city. He forgot that with every election, good ideas could have fair airing and people could vote in fair, impartial and far sighted terms towards national development.
Unfortunately, by the time of the interview, LKY had all but done away with the concept of by-elections because he had invented the GRC system of elections where by elections would not be triggered by demise of resignation due to moral conflict between MP and party by as history reveals, in the case of Marine Parade GRC under then PM Goh CT, a political tool to help the incumbent political party amass even more power.
It can be said that faith in the quality of democracy was what united the pioneer and merdeka generation to support PAP in it's leadership towards growth of the Singapore economy. It can also be expected that the lack of respect for proper democratic process in Singapore today will demoralize the working populace (especially gen Z which is well read being able to access Internet) to see that the PAP, beginning with LKY who forgot the source of his success, bit the hand that fed him, killed the goose that laid golden eggs for Singapore WILL NOT BE IN SUPPORT OF THE PAP MOVING FORWARDS because whilst 1st Gen PAP cabinet respected democracy and the open discussion of ideas, this respect for opposition surfaced ideas was much diminished thereafter.
It is in fact telling that LKY family in less than 2 yrs after his passing, in in a state of civil war over the fate of 38 Oxyley road and his grandchildren are likely to fight tooth and nail over it's future. This is a harbinger of the fate of Singapore.
Singapore must survive on moral values, which is the secret ingredient that cannot be bought with $$$ ( be captured like what LKY described the fate of small food companies to be where PepsiCo of America would buy out any small company with promise and turn it into it's own property/ subsidiary).
LKY didn't realise that the moral superiority of democracy over communism was what made MNCs choose Singapore over Vietnam to begin with and that the better infrastructure and workforce we're just by products of a more democratic government and the people's trust in their elected government.
LKY has poisoned the spring from which he himself (and Singapore) drinks from.
Singapore, for this very reason, will suffer from indigestion (economic, social etc) in the years to come.
