I genuinely thought this was a thread about North Korean defectors' opinions on North Korean BBQ vs South Korean BBQ vs American BBQ.

That would have been a somewhat interesting topic; although I can assure you that Korean BBQ>American BBQ.

So, it would have been a race between North Korea and South Korea.

South Korea may well win out, but than again, North Korean BBQ may be superior. In poor Asian countries, a common practice is to keep the animal alive until just before it's time to slaughter it and carve it up. A substitute for refrigeration, if you will.

So, North Korean BBQ potentially has an edge.

American BBQ is good too, no doubt about that. But just not as good.

Needless to say, I was let down when I opened the thread the first time.

I disagree, each style has its uniqueness and yummy-ness. I would not rate one better than the other.

Technically, Korean BBQ isn't really BBQ. Technically BBQ = cooking via indirect heat. Korean BBQ is basically just grilling. Which is wonderful and tasty, but not actually BBQ.

I anticipated such a response, and really don't disagree.

I had the pleasure to work in the South for a bit, and try some real true American BBQ. I had mixed feelings in writing that stuff, but I still felt that in my heart of hearts, I prefer the Korean iteration. But, it's tough to distinguish between the two in terms of which is better. But, I wasn't merely 'taking the piss', I really did think that is what the thread was about at first.

Did you watch the vids?

I watched a bit of the first one, and didn't find it entirely un-worthwhile. I'm a long-time North Korea watcher, and it seemed like there was some information to be gleaned. I just didn't feel like watching them all through at the time. And I was a little suspicious of the messenger (that'd be you), so that gave me even less incentive. I may watch them through yet, though.

You can relax I didn't make the videos, I just posted the links.

Between defections, mass executions and starvation NK is running out of people shouldn't committed communists migrate to the NK to help out?

These North Korean defectors were illegal immigrants in China before they were allowed to immigrate to the United States as defectors. To get the refugee visa, they have learned to elaborate on their horrible experiences in North Korea. North Korean defectors are known to change their stories they made up, which is similar to comfort women survivors in South Korea. Probably this is a cultural thing.

The young girl doesn't have a Korean accent; though does seem to have a Central Asian accent. Maybe she is from Kazakhstan (where a sizable Korean population lives, who were removed to there by the Soviets).

But actually, she doesn't even look Korean. So perhaps she is from Kyrgyzstan.

Anyhow, I think the video (which is not very lengthy, so easy to watch and comment on) makes good points, which I've had at least an intuitive awareness of for some time.

I've heard of 'North Korean defectors' being denied passage to South Korea, because their stories were not very credible, and they didn't have documentation to prove their situation (which they do demand).

I've heard Iranians on BBC, for example, telling completely unverifiable horror stories, which was like news porn; but sounded about just as genuine as Brent Kavenaugh the other day before the Senate.

I agree, it seems likely that they are making most of it up or are professional actors. I notice that North Korea has a nuclear program and the south does not, seems like a rather backward nation in comparison to advanced scientific North. Hopefully the people there will be liberated from yankee occupation one day and will be able to live like their free brothers and sisters in the best Korea.
