After the Second World War, most countries were ruined. The US did not face the difficulties of post-war reconstruction of the peaceful way of life and economy, on the contrary, industry is developing, the country is getting richer. Therefore, Europeans and other countries had to be content with the products of American mass culture, which, after all the horrors of the war, led the mass consumer from hard reality into a ghostly world of well-being, a "beautiful life", into a world, where everyone is "equal" for all opportunities, "equal" for all chances of success and happiness.
Claiming for a dominant position in the world, the US sought to impose its ideology, its culture, its way of life on Western European countries and Japan. The American model of mass culture has shown surprising adaptability to the most diverse cultural contexts.
In the first years of the occupation of Japan, the American command issued many laws and directives, basic rights and freedoms were declared, political and cultural figures were released from prisons, pro-fascist associations (including the Japanese Literary Society and the Association of Writers of Great East Asia) were dissolved, cinematic and theatrical censorship was abolished.
The headquarter of the occupying forces created the Civil Information and Education Department, whose functions included the management of various areas of culture, and the suppression of the manifestations of the Japanese militarism ideology. The Civilian Censorship Department censored all forms of information - books, films, radio programs, correspondence, etc. In September 1945, the "Press Code" ("Presu Kodo") was issued, a directive prohibiting publication of criticism of the occupation administration and any materials capable of damaging American policy. For example, it was forbidden to mention the cruelties of American servicemen.
One of the measures to democratize Japanese society is the regulation in the field of religion. According to the directive of December 15, 1945, all Shinto institutions (temples, schools, etc.) were separated from the state, and the Temple Bureau of the Ministry of the Interior and institutions involved in the preparation of priests and the study of this religion were dissolved. The dissemination of the Shinto ideas in educational institutions fell under the ban, and Shinto altars were removed from all schools. At the same time, the influence of Christianity increased. Under the auspices of the American authorities, missionaries became active in Japan. Catholics and representatives of other faiths created in the country a large network of schools, seminaries and universities.
The revitalization of cultural life, which began with the end of World War II, came in painting. In the war years, in accordance with the policy of the "Japanese spirit", the direction of traditional Japanese painting "nihonga" was implanted, but then it was suppressed, and several European oil painting schools were established.
The onslaught of the American "mass culture" in Japan has been destroying the cultural traditions of the people, leading to moral degradation of Japanese society.
The modern generation of Japanese lives in accordance with American ideals. Young Japanese are no longer interested in preserving traditional Japanese culture, which has been formed for many centuries. Japan is losing its identity and becoming a cultural puppet of the United States, and that leads to increased political and economic influence of the USA on the Land of the Rising Sun.
Thus, if the situation does not change in the near future, then Japan will completely squander its cultural heritage and become like the Asian state of the USA.
