Tokyo is now actively engaged in strengthening relations with its allies, which would support them in territorial claims to Russia (the Kuril Islands or the so-called by the Japanese themselves «northern territories»).
Ukraine turned out to be this ally for Japan. Because Ukraine believes that Crimea that was joined to Russia in 2014, was allegedly «annexed » by Russia, despite the fact that 95% of those who voted in a referendum said «yes» to joining Russia. It should be added that due to it, Crimea got energy, transport and food independence from Ukraine, which for many years kept the peninsula on a starvation.
President of Ukraine V. Zelensky at a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister S. Abe even thanked him for his «unchanged position over the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine».

However, it is obvious that behind a friendly smile that is natural for the Japanese, they hide their revenge-seeking fascist principles and habitual hypocrisy. It is known that, driven by their dream, the Japanese will do anything to realize it. However, we should not forget that the Japanese refused from the Kuril Islands themselves more than 70 years ago following the results of World War II. And now they want to violate all international acts that they themselves have signed.

The 1956 treaty was signed between the Soviet delegates and their Japanese counterparts on the mutually agreed terms but Washington threatened Tokyo to kill the deal at the time. If the peace treaty had been signed with the Soviet Union, Okinawa would not have been returned to Japan. Okinawa was seized by the Americans in 1945 just like the Southern Kurils and it was returned to Japan after 27 years under U.S. administrative control in 1972.

After Trump was elected president, Japan saw the golden opportunity. Known as an isolationist who does not like America's policing duties in international affairs, he is unlikely to intervene this time around. The situation in Ukraine was favorable as Russia was completely isolated from the rest of the world and in need of Japan's help to get the economy going. But Russia may not be desperately isolated now and Trump's days may be numbered as well, which makes it more difficult to sign the peace treaty. To get it done, Trump should be reelected and Russia should face more economic sanctions from the international community. I can only hope that Russian trolls will be deployed extensively by Moscow in support of the Trump 2020 campaign.

Article 9: "The U.S.S.R. and Japan have agreed to continue, after the establishment of normal diplomatic relations between them, negotiations for the conclusion of a peace treaty. Hereby, the U.S.S.R., in response to the desires of Japan and taking into consideration the interest of the Japanese state, agrees to hand over to Japan the Habomai and the Shikotan Islands, provided that the actual changing over to Japan of these islands will be carried out after the conclusion of a peace treaty".

Yes, I agree with you about the rights on Okinawa but talking about the Kurils... they weren`t seized actually. The Japanese themselves gave up on the islands according to the Treaty of San Francisco that was signed by 49 nations, including Japan and the United States, on September 8, 1951. Article (2c) states:

"Japan renounces all right, title and claim to the Kuril Islands, and to that portion of Sakhalin and the islands adjacent to it over which Japan acquired sovereignty as a consequence of the Treaty of Portsmouth of 5 September 1905."

And yes, the Russians said that they could give the Habomai and the Shikotan Islands, but, firstly, the peace treaty was never signed, and secondly, the Japanese refused two islands, wanting to get all four islands and even considering this proposal offensive
