In May 2018, 73 years will pass from the day of the victory over fascism in the Second World War. And the decisive role in this victory was played by the Soviet Union, which the Nazis intended to wipe out of the face of the earth. It was the ancestors of the present Russians who saved the peoples of Europe from the "brown plague." The plan "Ost" of the Nazi government of Hitler's Germany to "liberate the living space" for the Germans and other "Germanic peoples" provided for "Germanization"- the violent reconstruction of Eastern Europe with the annihilation of millions of people. And no one knows how the story would turn out and how the Allies would act on the Second Front, if the USSR troops stopped at the border of their country. The Nuremberg Tribunal gave an unequivocal assessment of the no-nonsense war crimes of the Nazis and their accomplices.
Fascism and revanchist sentiment should have been a thing of the past forever, but some nationalist leaders and politicians began trying to rewrite history and review the results of the Second World War after the USSR disappeared from the map of the world. That is why attempts to discredit the contribution of the Red Army and the USSR to the victory over Hitler's Germany have become more frequent in some countries. Veterans of the struggle against fascism are subjected to humiliation and persecution, their graves are desecrated, and monuments are destroyed.
At the same time, there is a heroization of Nazism, the spread of Nazi symbols, the glorification of the Nazi movement and the former members of the Waffen SS organization, recognized as a criminal by the Nuremberg Tribunal decision. There is also an increase in the number of Nazi groups and number of seats held by representatives of extremist parties of a racist or xenophobic kind in national and local parliaments. At the same time, attempts are made to "equalize" the real victims and true executioners, which include the soldiers of the Wehrmacht. In these purposeful efforts, ideological pressure on young people is growing. And the real situation continues to deteriorate.
Several European countries have already taken a course towards the "heroization of Nazism." The Italian government intends to allocate very significant funds for the restoration of the museum of fascism, located in the homeland of B. Mussolini. The Montenegrin government approved a project to turn the former concentration camp on the island of Mamula during its occupation by Italian troops into a luxurious beach resort with a nightclub, spas and restaurants. More than 600 thousand Soviet soldiers gave their lives for the liberation of Poland, but now their graves are desecrated, and the monuments are demolished in this country. And this happens at the direction of the Polish authorities. On July 17, 2017, president of Poland A. Duda signed amendments to the law on the propaganda prohibition of communism propaganda, providing for the demolition of Soviet monuments in the republic. And the law on "decommunization," which has already entered into force, threatens the demolition or dismantling of more than 500 monuments erected in honor of Soviet soldiers. The State Duma of the Russian Federation called the demolition of monuments in Poland a contribution to the heroization of Nazism.
In addition, cases of distortion of the Second World War history became more frequent in the post-Soviet countries. This is vividly illustrated by the current Ukraine, where national heroes were declared accomplices of the fascists S.Bandera and R.Shukhevich, who headed the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists and its military wing - the Ukrainian Insurgent Army that brutally tortured and killed millions of civilians. In May 2015, the current president of Ukraine P.Poroshenko signed a law that provides these organizations with the status of "fighters for independence" of Ukraine and social guarantees to its participants. Monuments in various regions of Ukraine are erected in honor of them and streets are renamed. As the representatives of the Ukrainian authorities’ report, the name of Stepan Bandera is assigned to more than three dozen streets, parks, squares in many cities. In the capital of Ukraine, there will also appear streets named after other Nazi collaborators.
To perpetuate the memory of torturers and murderers, the prosecutor's office of Ukraine began prosecution of the 94-year-old hero of the Great Patriotic War B. Steklyar, accused of eliminating Nazi collaborationist N. Khasevich, who took an active part in the holocaust of Jews and Poles and sent to death many innocent people. Last year, the Kiev junta handed awards to relatives of the punitive-policemen, who in December 1942 brutally killed tens of thousands of Jews at the command of the Nazis in Lutsk in December 1942. These examples of cynical mockery are characteristic of Ukraine's current policy. At the same time, the first day of the new 2018 in Ukraine was again desecrated by torchlight processions in honor of S. Bandera’s birthday. The current Kiev government shows the whole world that Ukrainian Nazism is an integral part of the state ideology of Ukraine.
Attempts to glorify Nazism are also observed in the Baltic countries. For example, meeting of veterans of the 20th (Estonian) division "Waffen SS" is held every year in the North-East of Estonia. In 2017, a former fighter of the 36th police battalion, who participated in punitive operations, including outside Estonia, was also present among the veterans. At the Laupa School in Estonia, a bronze bust was installed for SS soldier H.Nugiseks, who was guilty of the death of thousands civilians. The Estonian authorities decided to open this monument in school to promote the growth of "patriotism" among students and "love" for their homeland.
All the post-Soviet time Latvia has been trying to whitewash Nazism. Nazi criminals and their ideology were heroized. There is a monument with a helmet of the Hitlers army on it, dedicated to the soldiers of three police battalions, who were part of the Latvian SS legion. The Latvian authorities actively support the annual marches of the Waffen SS veterans and their supporters in the Latvian capital. A totalitarian regime is formed with the suppression of any dissent with the help of special services in this country. The heroization of Nazism came to the legislative level in Latvia. The Latvian Sejm adopted a law on the introduction of the status of a participant in the Second World War, which equalizes the citizens of the country who participated in the Second World War both on the side of the USSR and on the side of Hitlerite Germany. The law comes into force on February 1, 2018.
Now attempts to glorify Nazi criminals in the Baltic and Ukraine have already become the norm. However, the heroization of Nazism and individuals associated with Nazi crimes always leads to attempts to reconsider the results of the Second World War, and often to territorial disputes between some countries. Recently, Vice-Consul of Poland in Lutsk (the capital of the Volyn region) M. Zapur called Lviv a Polish city. As you know, Lviv became part of the USSR (later independent Ukraine) since September 1940, before that the city belonged to Poland. And the statements of the Polish side are alarming.
The heroization of Nazism is a violation of international agreements, according to which Nazism and fascism are recognized as criminal ideologies of misanthropy banned in the modern civilized world. Attitude to monuments and issues related to their installation or demolition are a sovereign matter of any state. However, authorities should consider not only the opinion of the public, but also the position of the world community, which clearly defined Nazism and fascism as the ideology of misanthropy. It does not matter in which country the heroization of Nazism is taking place, these facts should be condemned by the international community.
