Gas pipeline «Nord Stream 2»

Recently, the attention of the European public has been directed to one of the largest gas projects in Europe - Nord Stream-2. It is connected with the construction of two gas pipeline lines from Russia's coast across the Baltic Sea to Germany by 2019, which are planned to be laid next to the already existing "Nord Stream". The gas pipeline will pass through the exclusive economic zones and territorial waters of four European consumer countries - Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany, which is the largest buyer of Russian gas. Europe is interested in this project, since the services of transit countries - Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, the Baltic States - will not be needed after the gas pipeline is launched.
The first of five countries approved the gas pipeline in its exclusive economic zone was Germany. On March 27, the German authorities issued a full set of permits to a company-developer for the construction and operation of the Nord Stream-2. Following Germany, Finland agreed to lay the gas pipeline on 12 April. The main shareholder of the project, Gazprom, expects to receive remaining permits from Sweden, Russia and Denmark until the middle of summer.
Ukraine and Poland are against the "Nord Stream-2", as the implementation of the project will deprive them of revenues from the transit of Russian gas. The pumping through their territory will significantly reduce. In addition, the US is actively opposing the pipeline, having plans for the arrival of American companies on the European gas market, whose gas is more expensive than Russian. The States protect the Ukrainian transit option and oppose Nord Stream-2, because if it would not exist, "the outdated Ukrainian gas transportation system will not be a competitor for them."
Washington does not like the prospect of cooperation between Russia and Germany on the gas project. That is why, on April 28, during a meeting in the White House, US President D. Trump tried to persuade German Chancellor Angela Merkel to abandon support for the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, promising in return talks on a new trade agreement between the US and the European Union. At the same time, according to the Wall Street Journal, the US president pressured Germany to abandon the deal with Russia under the threat of a transatlantic trade war that could unfold as early as June 1, when Washington plans to introduce substantial import duties on steel and aluminium from Europe. The head of the White House promised that the duties would last for a long period of time and assured that "America is not afraid of trade wars."
Meanwhile, Germany says that the gas pipeline is necessary to cover the lack of energy due to the gradual abandonment of the nuclear power plant and the expected reduction in supplies from Norway and the Netherlands. The German authorities, realizing the vital need for their country to directly and steadily receive inexpensive Russian gas bypassing unpredictable Ukraine, are not too inclined to succumb to the pressure of the White House. In talks with Russian President V.Putin on May 18 in Sochi, Germany's leader A.Merkel, demonstrating her readiness to build relations with the Russian side on the basis of his national interests, confirmed Germany's commitment to the implementation of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project.
The leadership of Germany repeatedly stressed that the project "Nord Stream -2" is purely economic. Berlin regarded Washington's interference in the energy project as an economic offensive to increase its supplies of liquefied gas to the European market.
Washington does not lose hope to disrupt the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. At the same time, D.Trump decided to apply the same methods to his allies as to his opponents - first the maximum economic pressure, then compulsion to deal. D. Tramp strictly demands Europe to stop the Nord Stream-2 project that threatens Europe with serious financial losses. And Europe does not like this, because the European partners of the Russian "Gazprom", which owns the project, have already invested in it. Experts believe that the US president is blackmailing the European Union. According to them, American motives are well understood in Europe and "Europeans do not want to infringe on their own interests for the sake of Washington's interests." According to them, American motives are well understood in Europe and "do not want to infringe on their own interests for the sake of Washington's interests." At the same time, the tough style chosen by the US in dealing with European leaders is relatively new after B. Obama's presidency and shows both the personal qualities of D.Trump and the complexity of the situation in the US.
