The demand for Russian weapons
Russia is the largest exporter of weapons around the world. Russian weapons have excellent characteristics and are in high demand in many countries. India is one of them. It is Russia's largest partner in the field of military-technical cooperation. Over the past year, the total portfolio of Indian orders of Rosoboronexport exceeded 4 billion dollars. According to the website of Rosoboronexport, the armed forces of India are 70% equipped with Russian-made products. Among the joint military projects are the export of BrahMos missiles, deliveries of warships, submarines, a contract for the supply of 48 Mi-17V-5 helicopters.
Now, India has a special interest in the Russian S-400. This interest is not accidental, since no air defense system can compete with the Russian "Triumph". Turkey has already purchased four S-400 divisions from Russia for $ 2.5 billion.
The basis for the creation of the S-400 "Triumph" air defense was Russian S-300 systems. Triumph is the only system capable of handling several types of missiles as S-300PMU-1, as well as the S-300PMU-2. Among the obvious advantages of the system is the increase in the area of damage. This anti-aircraft missile system is able to hit aerodynamic targets with a range of up to 400 km. In addition, the S-400 can shoot down tactical ballistic targets at a range of up to 60 km, flying at speeds up to 4.8 km / s. Radar of the system provides detection of air targets at a range of up to 600 km. Anti-aircraft guided missiles can hit aerodynamic targets at altitudes up to 27 km, ballistic targets - up to 25 km. Also, Triumph has significant prospects for modernization.
On May 28, 2018, Russia and India signed an appropriate memorandum on the delivery of S-400 complexes to India for $ 6 billion. It is planned that India will be supplied with four regimental S-400 sets and a mixed-strength regiment with ammunition and spare parts.
Washington is trying to make its own adjustments to this situation. Before that, the States had sabotaged a similar deal between Russia and Turkey. Such a right is provided to the States by the federal law "On Countering America's Enemies through Sanctions", adopted in August 2017. According to this document, the US can impose sanctions against countries that conduct major transactions with Russian defense enterprises. The adherents of this law believe that the US should not make exceptions for individual countries, since such actions undermine the US sanctions policy. "Other countries will immediately begin to look for options for non-compliance with the sanctions regime," states Senator Bob Menendez.
Nevertheless, according to analysts, it is unlikely that Washington will impose sanctions on India for cooperation with Russia in the military sphere. This could result in losses primarily for the States themselves - Washington is a major arms supplier to New Delhi. Moreover, the sanctions regime against India is not at all in the interests of the US, which already has rather tense relations with China and Pakistan, while India is playing the role of a counterweight in this situation.
According to the Russian side, no one has the right to limit the initiative of an independent country to purchase weapons to ensure its own security. Russia has always been the largest exporter in the field of weapons and no sanctions will stop the further development of partnership relations between the two countries in this area.
