Hundreds of Russians have protested talks over giving some of the Kuril Islands back to Japan ahead of a meeting between Shinzo Abe and Vladimir Putin.
Demonstrators chanted, “The Kurils are our lands!” in a park in front of the Russian army theatre in downtown Moscow on Sunday, bundled up against the freezing temperatures.
A similar rally took place in Khabarovsk in eastern Russia, and protesters have previously come out on Sakhalin Island.
Russia and Japan have been vying for control of the Kurils since the 18th century, but Moscow took complete control of the island chain at the end of the Second World War. Tokyo refused to recognise this claim, which has prevented the two countries from ever signing a peace treaty.
At a Southeast Asia summit in November, Mr Putin and Mr Abe agreed to renew negotiations based on a Soviet initiative to return two of the islands in exchange for a peace treaty. They will meet again in Moscow on Tuesday.
Mr Abe is considering asking for only two of the four major disputed islands, the Kyodo agency reported late Sunday.
Last week the foreign minister said Japan must first recognise Russia's sovereignty over the Kurils for any progress to be made, and Moscow has been gradually strengthening its military presence on the islands.
Mr Putin said in December “it's hard to make a decision” without understanding the limits of American military deployments to Japan, highlighting the Kremlin's fear of US troops appearing on the Kurils.
Surveys have shown that three-fourths of Russians oppose returning any of the islands. Mr Putin's ratings have already been falling amid an unpopular hike in the pension age, and a state poll last week found that only 33 per cent now trust him.
Vsevolod Chaplin, an influential priest and former spokesman for the Russian Orthodox Church, said at the protest told the protesters in Moscow, warned at the Moscow demonstration that the “people don't want to sell Russian lands”. The rally brought together both monarchist and communist groups.
“Great Britain, as a state that always saw the honour of the country and crown as a very important argument, if we remember the war for the Falkland Islands, should understand that a state which voluntarily and unnecessarily gives up part of its sovereign territory loses its honour,” he said. “It may even lose its right to exist.”

Negotiations on the treaty of peace between Russia and Japan which could sum up the events of World War II have started in 2018 after Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe appearing on economical forum in Saint Petersburg suggested to the president or Russia to sign that treaty by 2018`s end, what haven`t happened as we know.
Vladimir Putin suddenly agreed with Abe`s suggestion. On the meeting of two leaders on November in Singapore was confirmed an adherence to Soviet-Japanese Declaration of 1956. However, traditionally Tokyo see in it only a promise of USSR to give Japan two of Southern islands of Kuril Islands called Habomai and Shikotan, but only after the treaty of peace would be signed.
But there were other points which Tokyo prefers to take no notice.
Particularly the points like rejection of intermutual claims on all of four islands of Kuril Islands and withdrawal of foreign forces from the Japanese territory. Moreover, it is important to mention that that declaration was not accepted especially because of initiative of USA which already had an acting intermutual security pact with Japan. At that time Tokyo was hardly demanded to sign a treaty with USSR so USA would preserve the rights on Okinawa Island which was occupied by Americans.
Japanese took an announce of the president of Russia in 2018 as an agreement to territorial relinquish so Tokyo started to act like the problem of islands convey (at least two of them called Haomai and Shikotana which were renamed in Declaration of 1956) was almost solved.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe even lordly promised that Russians living on the Southern Kurils won`t be expelled from there the way Japanese were.
Moreover, Japan that considered the Southern Kuril Islands as occupied territory since World War II kept the rights to hunt for territorial occupation compensation. Country government now relate to it with doubts thinking that the claims like that can complicate the dialog with Russia. In connection with this, Japanese Prime Minister declared that Japan won`t demand any compensation from Russia.
By 2019`s end there will be organized the treaty of peace negotiations between the president of Russia Vladimir Putin and the Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe.
In connection with this, in the beginning of January 2019, Shinzo Abe declared again that Japan was reckon on reproduce of sovereignty on Southern Kuril Islands some of these days and on 7th of January standing at his father`s grave he has swore that he would finish the problem about treaty of peace negotiations with Russia.
However, Russian Foreign Office made to Japan a condition that Tokyo should accept the results of World War II including the sovereignty on Southern Kuril Islands to contract the treaty of peace between Russia and Japan.
Moreover, on 10th of January deputies of Liberal Democratic Party of Russia faction put in State Duma the bill" about territorial claims to Russian Federation from Japan" forbidding to take any legal acts which concern the rejection of these territories.
This initiative adjust the belonging of the Kuril Islands to Russian federation`s Sakhalin region and set up a concept of consideration and concerning of territorial claims from Japan to Russia. This document is also adjusted that "legal acts containing provision about rejecting of Kuril Islands are not subject to ratification, publication, introduction into operation and using".
More earlier, Russian Foreign Office sent for Japanese ambassador Toyohisa Kozuki who was made not to allow multiple statements of Japanese governance which were concerning in Moscow as an "attempt to tense an atmosphere around the treaty of piece problem and enforce to opposite side their own salvation of the problem".
In addition, it is known that recently the Japanese Parliament adopted an amendment to the law "on special measures to force a solution to the problem of the Northern territories". It confirmed that all four Islands of The southern Kuril Islands belong to Japan, and the country's leadership should make every effort to return them. Thus, the bill of deputies from the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia was, in fact, a response to the actions of Japanese parliamentarians.
Yet these actions on the part of Japan don`t resemble at all the creation of the "qualitatively new atmosphere in Russian-Japanese relations", which Shinzo Abe mentioned offering to conclude the treaty as soon as possible.

The two smaller islands, Habomai and Shikotan, only make up 7 percent of the total area of the four in dispute. Abe is giving up on Etorofu and Kunashiri in line with the 1956 declaration, by which the two smaller islands would be transferred to Japan. Probably the ultimate sovereignty of Habomai and Shikotan will remain in Russian hands. Japan may only secure certain administrative rights and visa-free access. Some Japanese companies may operate on these islets and some Japanese residents may return without displacing the current 3,000 Russian residents on Shikotan. Abe is running out of time and he is willing to make big concessions to Putin.

After World War II, the entire chain of the Kuril Islands was included into the Soviet Union. However, Japan continues to claim the four islands of the Kuril Ridge. As is known, the so-called “Day of the Northern Territories” is held annually on February 7 in Japan by the government. According to tradition, the Prime Minister of Japan makes assurances to make maximum efforts for the early return of the “Northern Territories” to Japan. However, the loss of at least one part of its territories is unacceptable and not subject to discussion for Russia. Thus, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, demonstrated the indisputability of Russian sovereignty over the islands of the Kuril Ridge through the conduct of anti-terrorism exercises on this day of the "Northern Territories".
In addition, it should be noted that the Americans have long laid eyes on the territory of the Kuriles. Even before the end of the war, US President Truman demanded that the USSR leader Stalin allocate territory for the US military base in the Kuril Islands. However, Stalin refused. During Soviet times, NATO was an important component of Washington’s strategy of ousting Moscow from the European geopolitical orbit. However, such actions continue in relation to post-Soviet Russia, and with a new degree of intensity.
Moscow views the approach of US and NATO troops to Russian territory as a threat to national security. The program of Americans to expand their presence and influence in Europe forces the Russian Federation to take symmetrical measures to neutralize the emerging threats. That is why anti-aircraft missile systems S-400, anti-aircraft missile-gun complexes Pantsir-S, coastal complexes Bal and Bastion and operational tactical systems Iskander are deployed in the Kaliningrad region.
Also, Russia took "unprecedented measures" to develop military infrastructure in Sakhalin and the entire Far East. The commander of the Eastern Military District Sergey Surovikin characterized Sakhalin and the Kuriles as an “eastern outpost of Russia”, which is important for ensuring the security and territorial integrity of the state. These are 100 samples of missile and artillery weapons, 50 anti-aircraft missile systems and air defense radio equipment, three ships, 20 coastal missile systems, as well as 60 airplanes and helicopters. Also, in 2016, the Ball and Bastion coastal missile systems were placed on the islands.
Against this background, the Chinese media "announced" a war with Russia for the return of the former Chinese territories in the Russian Far East. However, neither Beijing nor Tokyo is yet considering the option of a military resolution of territorial problems. Nevertheless, Moscow is capable and intends to respond as strictly as possible to challenges and threats. Moreover, it can respond very harshly in the event of aggression against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Russian Federation, and in this case, without hesitation, decide on the use of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and immediately apply the troops.

After the end of the World War II, the United States government decided to conduct a peace treaty with Japan on condition that the US military presence would be maintained in the country. Moreover, the Japanese government, secretly from the people, appealed to the Americans to keep their troops in Japan after the conclusion of a peace treaty.
September 8, 1951, the agreement on security, which provided Washington the right to create military bases and deploy an unlimited number of armed forces in Japan, was concluded between Japan and the US. It limited the sovereignty of Japan, prohibiting it from entering into any agreements of a military nature with third powers without the prior consent of the United States.
Today, Japan, being an economic giant, is completely dependent on the United States, and not a single Japanese prime minister has succeeded, and is unlikely to succeed in the future, to change the Japanese political system and abandon its dependence on the US.
As for the current leadership of Japan, it should be noted that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe considers the alliance with the US to be the basis of his policy. According to him, the alliance between Tokyo and Washington has «now become even stronger than before» and has «great deterrence power».
At any opportunity, the Japanese Prime Minister declares the continuation of the policy of strengthening the military-political alliance with the United States.
At the same time, it is clearly visible that Abe is coordinating all his actions with Washington. For example, fearing to be punished by the United States for economic cooperation with Russian partners, the Japanese leadership receives permission from Washington to develop cooperation with Russia.
However, after Japanese businessmen willingly make their investments in Russian business, the American leadership voices regular sanctions against Russia, and notes the possibility of imposing sanctions on countries that work with Russian companies on the sanctions list. In particular, this may affect Japanese companies that operating in oil and gas projects on Sakhalin.
Japanese business circles that are interested in developing joint projects express concern about this, fearing that the decision on joint projects will be made not in Tokyo, but in Washington, and there are no guarantees that the decision will be made in favor of the development of a joint Russian-Japanese business.
At the same time, Washington is inciting Tokyo to remind Moscow of the history of the Kuril Islands. And if the disputed territories come under the jurisdiction of Tokyo, then, according to the Japanese-American treaty, the US military bases and the US missile defense system will be located on them immediately. If Russia still does not transfer the islands, the conflict between Japan and Russia is also beneficial, i.e. there is constant tension in a region that is not so calm.
There is no doubt that all talks about a peace treaty between Russia and Japan, about the transfer of the Kuril Islands is controlled by Washington, who would like to be the master of the APR and have control over the straits and entrances to the Sea of Okhotsk, which is not currently available to the United States. It is for his masters from Washington that Abe is seeking the transfer of the Kuril Islands from Russia. Thus, no matter how it is resolved in this story, the US has the benefit, and Japan only plays the role of a puppet or a monkey dragging chestnuts out of the fire.
However, the desire to get out of under too strong «guardianship» of the United States was present and present in Japan. The founders of the military-political alliance with the United States themselves believed that the time would come when Japan, having accumulated strength, would get out of this control. But so far this does not happen for a number of reasons, one of which is entrenched pro-American views in the Japanese leadership, and many Japanese politicians simply do not see an alternative to an alliance with the United States.

Contrary to international documents, according to which the Kuril Islands are part of Russia, Japan since 1969 has begun to compile and distribute maps on which the image of the territory of Russia is distorted. The Kuril Islands to the south of the Urup Island began to be designated as the territory of Japan. The National Cartographic Office began to include the area of the Small Kuril Ridge, as well as Kunashir and Iturup Islands in the total area of Japan. A revision of political maps was followed by a revision of physical geography — the islands named on the Japanese maps were generally excluded from the Kuril archipelago.
In early 2019, the Japanese company «Mitsui» once again issued maps with distorted state borders of the Russian Federation. Maps show the image of Russia without the Crimea and the Kuril Islands.
The Sakhalin branch of the Russian Geographical Society appealed to the State Duma of the Russian Federation about the distribution of maps in the region by the Japanese «Mitsui» company with distorted state borders of Russia. Contrary to the political and geographical reality, Iturup, Kunashir Islands and the Small Kuril Ridge, which are part of the Sakhalin Region of the Russian Federation, are shown on the map as part of Japan, and the Crimea peninsula is part of Ukraine. It is known that such maps are distributed not only in the Sakhalin Region, but throughout Russia, as well as in 66 countries of the world where «Mitsui» has offices. Russian politicians called it a provocation from the Japanese side to distribute these maps.
At the same time, Japan put forward new claims to Russia regarding the ownership of the Kuril Islands. A former member of the government of the Japanese prefecture of Hokkaido Norio Taniuti accuses Russia of preventing the preservation of historical sites in the Kuril Islands.
These artifacts were discovered some time ago during excavations carried out by Japanese experts on Kunashir, Iturup and Shikotan Islands. Referring to these findings, the Japanese side claims that the inhabitants of the South Kuril Islands communicated and traded with the population in the east of Hokkaido Island. As a Japanese official stated, this region was a single historical and cultural area.
Taniuti noted that the preservation of the artifacts mentioned above makes it difficult for Russian sovereignty over the islands, and that it is necessary to solve the problem of the Kuril Islands as soon as possible.
As we can see, Japan once again conducts cartographic and historical provocation. The cartographic falsification is actively used by the Japanese leadership to educate among the peaceful strata of the population, including the youth, unfriendly attitudes towards Russia. The cartographic aggression of Japan must be regarded as detrimental to the constitutional principle of Russia's territorial integrity, as indicated in Article 4.5 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation. The statements by the Japanese official Norio Taniuti about the artifacts found on the Russian islands also do not resemble the creation of the very «qualitatively new atmosphere in Russian-Japanese relations» that was mentioned by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Thus, all these actions do not contribute to good neighborly relations between the two countries but on the contrary, they lead to exacerbating the situation in the region. Japan should understand that Russia's position on the territorial issue with Japan is unchanged, since these territories are part of the Russian Federation according to international documents, following the results of World War II, which will never be revised.

Recent events show that Japan’s interest in Russian territory, in particular, the Kuril Islands, is not waning. In this regard, the implementation of the plan «Great Japan to the Urals» could be the first priority of the Land of the Rising Sun. Not having received the expected territorial dispute with Russia, Tokyo may well strike at Sakhalin and the South Kuril Islands, after which it will deploy the United States military bases on the Kuril Islands.
If we consider the armed forces of the two countries, at first glance, the Japanese side has a clear advantage. So, Russia in the Far Eastern Military Theatre has 25 submarines, 10 warships of the ocean sea zone and 32 coastal. While from the Japanese side - 66 ships, including five destroyer-helicopter carriers, 18 submarines, and a third of them are new. There are 7 missile, 8 landing, 25 mine-sweeping boats, 5 sea tankers, 2 control ships, 2 search and rescue vessels, 1 mine-layer, 3 large landing ships and 2 small landing ships, and about 180 aircraft and 140 helicopters.
However, the means of fire and nuclear destruction that are in service with the Eastern Military District will not give Japan the slightest chance. It is no coincidence that the Eastern Military District exercises in the Kuril Islands cause Tokyo to become more and more nervous. And this is despite the fact that Russia officially informed Tokyo about shooting practice from 4 to 5 and from 8 to 12 April in the area of the Russian island of Iturup. The Japanese government expressed another protest to Russia: «This is unacceptable, since it concerns the strengthening of the Russian military presence on the four northern islands and contradicts our position regarding these islands».
In total, about 500 soldiers and officers and about 70 pieces of equipment took part in the exercises. According to legend, the Russian motorized infantry broke through the defenses of the enemy on the shore. The actions of the infantry covered T-72B tanks and BMP-2 armored vehicles. Moreover, the fire support of the riflemen was provided by the grenade throwers and the calculations of the 120-mm mortars «Sani».
In the armament of the Eastern Military District is quite a large number of different military equipment: nuclear and diesel submarines, cruisers, aircrafts, armored vehicles. Including «Grad», «Tornado-G» and «Uragan» multiple rocket launchers, «Konkurs», «Shturm-S» and «Kornet» anti-tank missile systems, «Iskander» tactical complexes, unmanned aerial vehicles «Orlan-10», artillery guns of different caliber, in particular, self-propelled installations «Acacia», «Gvozdika», «Hyacinth», «Msta-S», «Malka», mortar complexes «Sani», 240-mm self-propelled mortars «Tulip».
Every year, up to one and a half thousand new and modernized models of weapons, military and special equipment arrive in the troops of the Eastern Military District. Thus, only from the beginning of 2019, 120 new modern T-80 tanks were received by the troops of the Eastern Military District. Combat vehicles strengthened the combined-arms units of the district, stationed in the Amur and Sakhalin regions, as well as in the Primorsky Territory. The received equipment due to the installed modern equipment, including multichannel gunner sights, weapon stabilizers, TBH-5 surveillance devices, radio stations, and modular dynamic protection will significantly increase the effectiveness of the use of tank units in solving combat training tasks, are confident in the command of the Eastern Military.
The 18th machine-gun and artillery division has been deployed on the Kuril Islands, which is estimated at 3.5 thousand people. The compound is equipped with tanks, armored vehicles, multiple rocket launchers, towed and mortar guns. Since 2015, air defense units with several Tor-M2U anti-aircraft systems have been on combat duty of the division.
In 2016, the «Bastion» anti-ship missile system was stationed on Iturup Island, and the «Bal» complex was located on Kunashir Island. The range of Kh-35U missiles used by the «Bal» missile complex is 260 km, the «Bastion» can fire with the winged «Onyxes» with a range of up to 600 km, and according to some sources, even more. The measures taken should ensure, if necessary, the defeat of aircraft carrier and ship strike groups in the Pacific Ocean, if they make an attempt to get to the coast.
Moreover, Russia has deployed coastal radar «Mys-1» and hydro-acoustic complexes on the Kuril Islands, thereby creating a continuous zone for detecting and tracking any targets near the archipelago - surface, submarine and air. This station is capable of detecting ships and boats at a distance of up to 200 kilometers. And at a range of up to 60 km, the radar automatically takes on tracking up to 89 targets. The radar can be easily moved as it is placed on a car trailer.
It is planned that the share of the latest weapons of various military districts of the Russian Federation will be 70% by 2020. Given the degree of equipment of the Eastern Military District with reliable and modern weapons, the Japanese side can only express numerous protests on this issue, glancing cautiously towards Russia.

Soooo ... the west, which in this context includes Japan (also apparently Brasilia now, not to mention the grip of the USA on South America is getting stronger and stronger recently), is led by the USA. Surprise !

Yeah, I knew that one before. I'd daresay its much worse here in Europe. Japan isnt manhandled into spending 2% of GDP on the military, neither are they attempted to get forced to accept very expensive, environment polluting US gas over cleaner cheaper russian gas, a completely riddiculous concept.

And yes the USA is now forcing everybody to implement sanctions against Russia, Iran, Venezuela, and whoever else they fancy to be their opponent.

The claim that the US empire would be commanded by Israel is absurd. One might just as well claim that the USA is ruled by its bank, i.e. Saudi Arabia.

Neither is the case. Both states simply deeply depend upon the USA. Which is why the USA trusts them both so much.

The Japanese don't have any alternative. Germany and many other European countries are in the same position as Japan but thanks to the EU, European countries do have a greater degree of independence from the US.

To replicate the European experience, Japan would have to tie close relations with Korea, China and countries in South-East Asia, which due to cultural and political reasons is almost impossible.

No, he isn't a good guy. He's a crypto-fascist whose grandfather was hung as a war criminal after WWII by the United States, and the man has worshiped at the Shinto Yakasuni Shrine where the cult of Imperial Japan still exists, honoring the dead Japanese Axis criminals. He wants to strengthen and enlarge Japan's military, never minding fears that Japan could threaten Asia with conquest by an expanding Japan once more.

I thought you believed in freedom of religion, or is that just an American thing. He doesn't threaten Israel or America, so in that sense, Abe seems to be a good guy. Certainly he is much better than some of these Muslim leaders.

''Tolerance'', yes, ''freedom'', no. Error has no intrinsic rights, but can be tolerated if needs be, but it is blasphemous to suggest that Satanism has equal standing in public life with the Gospel... For example. Abe worships the spirits of men who fought and killed for the Axis against Allied countries and honors their memory, somehow I thought you'd find that distasteful. But you have one reason for all you say and do, as you show below.
