You would have thought that, during the Winter Olympics, somebody in the press would have tracked down Oksana Baiul to ask her opinion regarding the Russian pressure on Ukraine.

The Ukrainian figure skating diva won the gold medal in ladies’ singles at the 1994 Winter Olympics. Sure, Baiul is no towering intellect in the field of international relations, but her comments would have been a legitimate human-interest story.

Oksana and her family live in Las Vegas, and she said her heart breaks for family and friends singing that same anthem a world away while trying their best to survive. “They’re sitting in the bomb shelters with their pets,” Baiul-Farina said. “Without food, without diapers, without medicine, singing the songs.”
