On Poland's border with Ukraine, Poland is welcoming Ukrainian refugees and Polish people who help refugees along their way are celebrated as heroes.

But on Poland's border with Belarus, it's a very different story. The Polish authorities are cracking down and threatening anyone who even gives migrants food with serious prison time.

Why the huge difference? Because even before the Ukrainian crisis started (with Russia invading Ukraine), Belarus was playing politics with Poland. Belarus is welcoming migrants from all other parts of the world, mainly from the Middle East, to fly into Belarus and then illegally cross the border into Poland. Belarus knew Poland didn't want to take migrants, so saw this as a way of trying to overwhelm Poland. Using migrants as strategy to get petty revenge.
(Belarus doesn't really have anything to worry about because living standards are so poor in Belarus, all of those migrants flying to Belarus are going to immediately try crossing into Poland)

The use of the migration to "attack" Poland was a clever ploy by Belarus because they know Poland really does not like it, but due to the rest of the EU having a mentality of being very supportive of migration from other countries, it is something that would be very awkward for the rest of the EU to complain about, so Belarus knows it will not suffer any repercussions from the EU in retribution. In other words Poland can't complain about this to the EU. The EU has tried to pressure other Eastern European member countries before that tried to stop migration, so this makes it awkward for Poland.

Belarus began using this policy as a response to EU sanctions, using immigration as a political tool to try to push back and put pressure on the EU, and especially its neighbor Poland.
