Potemkin wrote:And that was and is an inevitable legacy of WWII. So it was always going to be a factor.

Sanctions are always and everywhere idiotic virtue-signalling. You won’t get any arguments from me there.

It wasn't. Puppetry is not inevitable given the power of the subservient regime. It is possible to liberate yourself from far flung Imperial overlords when you are literally the biggest economy on the continent. Germany has had ample opportunity to regain its independence and kick the occupiers out-it hasn't, by choice. Now you will pay the iron price of the puppet state. The US will use you destructively for its own ends until you are turned into a wasteland. Again Germans chose this. The 90's were a time where the US could be removed from the continent, with no USSR to justify its presence and with east Germany re-acquired. Instead 'West' Germans went even deeper into servitude. The EU is another puppet, controlled directly by Washington via Berlin. It's a rich tapestry of puppetry and quite frankly utterly disgusting. There's nothing worse than dishonest imperialism. Russians are honest, Chinese are honest. America is a diseased vulture feasting on the corpses of the British and Germans to this day. Dastardly.

Potemkin wrote:This is a legacy of Angela Merkel. After the problems with Fukushima, Merkel immediately and unilaterally, with no consultation, cancelled Germany’s nuclear power programme. This guaranteed that Germany would be dependent on Russia for its energy needs. Hey, what could possibly go wrong…? :excited:

She did that because there is a base hostility against nuclear energy in Germany, AFAIK. Specially among Greens.

This definitely didn't start with her, Fukushima was the straw that broke the camel's back.

@Igor Antunov if Merkel had been so subservient to the US, she would've never depended on Russia. She would've just bought American LNG.

@Godstud it's just that the risk of a big accident scares many. This may not be relevant in e.g. most of Canada, the US or Europe but it is relevant in earthquake prone countries like Chile or Japan. There is a legitimate case, based on risk, against nuclear energy in the latter countries.

Another argument against nuclear is more of an economic kind, the initial investment is very high so there must be a large enough grid to make it profitable. Some countries are just neither wealthy nor populated enough to justify going nuclear.

These arguments, however, are not applicable in most of the US, Canada and Europe. For the US and Canada, I'd hesitate building nuclear plants close to the ring of fire, and in Europe I'd probably have my doubts about building one in Italy solely because of the seismic activity. Otherwise, yes, it makes sense to increase the share of nuclear energy in the mix.

We did it to ourselves (and by ‘we’, I mean the British and the Germans together). The Germans became a nation-state late in the day, and missed out on the imperialist feast. In retrospect, they should just have concentrated on what they did best - scientific innovation and hard work. They could have become the biggest economy in Europe within a few decades, and nobody had to die. But no, they had to have their “place in the sun”, which they could only get by taking it from the British, the largest and most powerful empire in human history…. By the time the dust settled in 1945, Europe was in ruins, and the Yanks and the Russkies were ruling over the rubble. And we deserved it.

By yeah, the Americans are the biggest hypocrites in human history. It’s difficult to stomach their sanctimonious twaddle. But we are where we are, and nations get the overlords they deserve.

It's a false perception. It is not backed by reality. Nuclear energy is safer than conventional energy sources, even if you count the accidents in.

Consider the Deepwater Horizon BP oil spill and anything that nuclear has done pales in comparison

It Sounds Crazy, But Fukushima, Chernobyl, And Three Mile Island Show Why Nuclear Is Inherently Safe
But now, eight years after Fukushima, the best-available science clearly shows that Caldicott’s estimate of the number of people killed by nuclear accidents was off by one million. Radiation from Chernobyl will kill, at most, 200 people, while the radiation from Fukushima and Three Mile Island will kill zero people.

In other words, the main lesson that should be drawn from the worst nuclear accidents is that nuclear energy has always been inherently safe.

It was sad watching Germany giving her sovereignty away in front of cameras in the middle of Germany.

6 months after this humiliation the Siemens (read it Germany) is whining that Russians intentionally obey the sanctions imposed onto them.

A sad, sad period for the EU, that should be forgotten and never spoken about again.
