Yalta agreement called for free and fair elections in Poland. Once those conditions were violated USA helped Poles in restoring their freedom.

I think Poland is seriously pushing her luck with the EU. With Britain and other countries finding increasingly difficult to bear the weight of Polish immigration and with Poland vetoing important deals with Russia, things are not going to turn out well for our dear Eastern Europeans.

Poland on its own isn't big or strong. But Poland is what is called pivotal state. Poland stand between German and Russia and thus always stands against possible alliances between those two countries. As Catholic and national country Poland stands against secular attempts of leftist totalitarism to create an EU superstate that would enforce leftist ideology on every European country.

The energy alliance requires joint action, and Putin has things to ask of Merkel. Moscow is very annoyed by Polish support of a pan-European cooperation agreement on energy policy.

Reagan did not bring down the USSR. The USSR had long been an ailing giant. Gorbachev tried to counter this with Glasnost and Perestroika policies, but failed.
