MOSCOW, February 21 (Itar-Tass) - Life expectancy in Russia is much lower than in developed countries of the world. Men in the USA, France and Japan outlive Russian men by 15 to 20 years, while women – by seven to 13 years, a source from the Russian government told Tass on Wednesday

However the truth is that Russia has lower life expectancy then third world countries.

I feel awfully sorry for Russian men, I hope one day their life expectancy will become as high as those in Bangladesh. Hopefully Russian government will ask Bangladesh for advice on how to improve life conditions.

I suppose so. Certainly the opportunities of highly paid jobs in the West for former garbage collectors and janitors from communist era have increased their prosperty and life expectancy as well. Now they work in better conditions and for real pay.

As for life expectancy - might sound spartan, but in the end piles of senile old people don't quite better the western economy - in Russia, well, sad as it is, people die when they age and their plant-life is not artificially supported beyond that margin.
I am wondering if there are figures of how long people live in mentally healthy state.
Personally not sure I'd like to live extra 5-10 years as a semi-intelligent self-defecating plant, though I might be of a different opinion when this time comes...

I knew some old Russians - friends of my Aunts. Not always the sharpest, but from what I could surmise they were not degrading.

Barring the alcoholics* and those who attempted suicide*, Ive noticed few Eastern Europeans whose mental ability drops signifigantly in old age.




* - much higher levels then here in the West.

thunderhawk, well, that's my point - they don't survive for as long as their EU counterparts, but the EU counterparts who survive past that age margin are often senile, making this situation a dubious advantage point. Though I do realize such argumentation is immoral.

Personally I've noticed on the people around me that as long as they work and their mind is occupied, they stay sharp. If they retire, then in few years they get very paranoid.

Noticed same for younger people too... But if for younger ones - usually they don't work/study temporary, - for elderly there is simply no returning to healthier mind state and they don't die because of advanced healthcare.
A fried of mine is a doctor in France - she said it is hard to look after loads and loads of people, who, well, can't talk, can't move - they just lie in bends and that's all they do... Like plants... I suppose though they can keep on living like that contributing to life expectancy figures...

Most of the Old Russians and other East Europeans I now live here in the West. They are/were quite old - 70s and up. Great grand aunt was in her 90s.


A few were general labourors who were nothing in Eastern Europe, but their capacity hasnt dropped much - hearing and health however have dropped a lot. The rest were academics of one sort or another.

The lot of them had intellectual habbits, largely reading papers in 2-3 languages.


The older members of my family in Eastern Europe are still sharp.. if slightly criminal (one is writing graduate thesises for cash). In Russia intellectual pass-times have started to fall by the way side and that I believe has led to a degradation of the elderly.

The shorter life spans are probably due to lack of food and medication, and poor environment, as income has dropped with the falling economy and their late age making them unsuitable/unacceptable for remaining available jobs.
