Muscular liberalism has to do with opposing religious extremism - right?. As long as it's non-denominational (christian-muslim-jewish etec etc) I think it's a good idea. If it only targets muslims then it's just another form of Neo-con-ism - IMO
Here in the US, liberals are inclined to tolerate the intolerance of religious fundamentalism because they feel that to be intolerant would be 'facsistic'. I'm not one of those liberals probably because I'm a militant atheist (muscular atheist?).
It's a real cunundrum for freethinkers to be intolerant of intolerance. It's like being dogmatically against dogmatism.
It's called the 'Paradox of Tolerance' - if a tolerant society allowed intolerance to spread, then the tolerant society would eventually cease to exist.
At school we did thought experiments on this, it was kind of disturbing and fun at the same time. Our group picked the Christian Dominionists - who believe that Christians are biblically mandated to control all earthly institutions. We had to imagine when (or if) we would have to step in and stop them, as they slowly gained control of the culture and government.

“Poverty is therefore a most necessary and indispensable ingredient in society…It is the source of wealth, since without poverty, there could be no labour” - Patrick Colquhoun, 1745 – 1820
