What's ironic about the Soviet space program is that it was, in a sense, more capitalist than the American program. America had one government department for space exploration: NASA. The Soviets didn't have any one equivalent to that. Instead, they had several firms that would compete for government contracts.

huh? No, it's more like, our government wanted to challenge the Russians and they had the ability to make NASA to go there. Just to let you know, our government uses private buisnesses for much of its tech. At the time they just decided to do it that way for the space race, it would be better off if done capitalist and we'd already have a moon colony.
