US anti-ballistic missile system in Asia-Pacific region
US strategic priorities and interests are shifting to the Asia-Pacific region, which is a key of Washington's global policy. US President Donald Trump said that today the priority of US policy in the region is to protect the US and its allies from the nuclear threat of the DPRK.
In this regard, on March 7, 2017, the United States started deploying THAAD anti-ballistic missile system in South Korea. The first two complexes of this system are already at the airbase near Seoul. It is reported that the system can be fully operational in April of 2017.
The decision to deploy the system on the territory of the Republic of Korea was made in July 2016. The deployment was planned for the summer of 2017, but it was decided to speed up the fulfillment of this plan, because the DPRK in early March conducted another nuclear test.
THAAD is particularly well suited to destroy small range and medium range ballistic missiles in their terminal phase. THAAD’s overall operation is similar to many other missile interceptor and surface-to-air missile systems: an X-Band active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar (AN/TPY-2) kicks off THAAD’s interception, detecting the target projectile. THAAD’s fire control and support equipment identifies, verifies, and initiates the launcher. The launcher–a road-mobile erector launcher, to be precise–finally releases the infrared seeker head-equipped THAAD missile which, according to the system’s manufacturer, then uses kinetic energy to destroy incoming missile.
US also plan to deploy the ABMS not only on the Korean peninsula, but also in Japan. Japan has been installing the modern radar of the US ABSM for a long time. According to official data, the purpose of this radar is to follow the missile launches from the North Korea coast. Moreover, it should be noted that one of US radar has already deployed on the territory of Japan.
The US military has officially stated that the deployment of the newest anti-ballistic missile system on the Korean peninsula is aimed only to protect the US and its allies in the APR from the nuclear-missile threat of the DPRK.
At the same time the representatives of military departments of Russia and China spoke about the threats of the system. In their view, Washington builds an anti-Russian and anti-Chinese system of protection against nuclear attack.
Moscow and Beijing believe that the deployment of the missile complex contributes neither to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, nor to peace and stability in the region. These actions seriously undermine the strategic interests and security interests of Russia, China and other countries and disrupt the strategic balance in the region.
However, in spite of protests from China and Russia, ROK and the US on 17 April 2017 during the visit of Vice-President Michael Pence agreed to accelerate the deployment of US missile defense systems "THAAD" on the territory of South Korea to further strengthen the combat readiness of the Alliance.
While Michael Pence said that the new US administration headed by President Donald trump is not going to follow the policy of "strategic patience" toward North Korea. He also noted that neither the United States nor South Korea will tolerate any further missile or nuclear tests by North Korea.
Thus, the United States under the guise of the fight against a growing North Korean nuclear threat increase their military presence in the region, and deploy missile defense system, which will be the first completed a complex missile defense system "THAAD" outside the United States. In fact the US global missile defense is aimed at undermining regional and international security and poses a serious threat to countries of the Asia-Pacific region.
