Eight Iranians who called for the resignation of Khamenei have reportedly been sentenced to a total of 72 years in prison.

A court in Mashhad has sentenced eight activists to a total of 72 years in prison.

In several open letters in 2019, dozens of Iranian dissidents called on Islamic Republic Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to step down.

The Revolutionary Court of Mashhad sentenced Hashem Khastar, Mohammad Nourizad, Mohammad Hossein Sepehri, and Fatemeh Sepehri – the signatories of open letter to supreme leader – alongside Abdul Rasoul Mortazavi, Hashem Rajaei, Gholamali Hosseinpour, and Morteza Ghasemi – supporters of the letter – to total 72 years in prison, six years ban from traveling abroad, and six years of internal exile.

Court has sentenced Hashem Khastar to 16 years in prison, 3 years’ banishment to the city of Nikshahr and three years ban from traveling abroad; Mohammad Nourizad 15 years in prison, 3 years’ exile to the city of Izeh and three years ban from traveling abroad.

Abdul Rasoul Mortazavi, who was a supporter of the letter of 14 activists, received 26 years. Mohammad Hossein Sepehri, and Fatemeh Sepehri received six years each.

Hashem Rajaei, Gholamali Hosseinpour, and Morteza Ghasemi received one year.

According to the reports, the signatories of the open letter to Iran’s supreme leader were charged with “insulting the founder of the Islamic Republic,” “insulting the supreme leader,” “propaganda,” cooperating with foreign media”, and “attending illegal meetings.”

Mohammad Hossein Aghasi, a lawyer in Tehran wrote in a tweet that the Revolutionary Court of Mashhad has sentenced four of those who wrote the letter to Khamenei to prison. On June 12, 2019, fourteen civil rights and political activists in Iran called for the Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, to step down. In a statement addressed to the “fellow citizens in Iran,” the signatories called Iranians to step up and demanded fundamental changes in the Iranian constitution and Khamenei’s resignation.

“The horrendous history of the past 40 years shows that not only there is no will for leaders to be accountable to the Iranian people, but also the ruling system insists on its way and the autocracy,” the activists wrote in their statement.

Gowhar Eshghi, Hoorieh Farajzadeh, Mohammad Karimbeigi, Hashem Khastar, Mohammad Mahdavifar, Mohammad Maleki, Javad Laal Mohammadi, Mohammad Nourizad, Mohammad Hossein Sepehri, Abbas Vahedian Shahroodi, Kamal Jaafari Yazdi, Reza Mehrgan, Mohammadreza Bayat and Zardosht Ahmadi Ragheb are the signatories of the first letter.

A week after the first open letter, the same group published another statement. In the second statement, they called for a non-violent change through a transition in the Iranian political system based on a free election.

Following the publication of these letters in August 2019, some of the signatories were summoned and arrested.
On 5 August, fourteen women activists also released a similar letter. Referring to the same demand of the fourteen political and social activists, the women’s rights activists protested the “gender apartheid” dominating the country.

“Four decades of Guardianship of the Islamist jurist (velāyat-e faqīh) has eliminated the rights of half of the country’s population,” the women’s rights activists said in their statement.

Nosrat Beheshti, Shahla Entesari, Zahra Jamali, Shahla Jahanbin, Ezzat Javadi Hessar, Nargess Mansouri, Farangis Mazloum, Kimia Norouzi Saber, Parva Pachideh, Guiti Pour Fazel, Fatemeh Sepehri, Maryam Soleimani, Sussan Taherkhani, and Fereshteh Tasvibi are the signatories to women rights activists letter.

The signatories have called on the Iranians to join them in saying: “No to the Islamic Republic.”

The UN Human Rights Council on Thursday praised Tehran in a periodic review of Iran’s rights record.

The 47-nation council adopted the report after a debate which featured lengthy praise for the Islamic Republic, according to UN Watch, a Geneva-based nonprofit organization.

The reports are meant to strengthen basic rights and freedoms by scrutinizing national governments.

In the report and at the debate, countries including North Korea, Syria, Russia and China applauded Iran’s rights record.

Tehran refused the UN’s Special Rapporteur on Iran, Javaid Rehman, to tour the country to investigate its human rights conditions.

Iran’s ambassador to the council, Esmaeil Baghaei Hamaneh, said Iran was “scapegoated for human rights violations,” and that the US was “viciously” targeting the Iranian health care system amid its severe coronavirus outbreak.

Deputy chief of Iran’s High Council on Human Rights, Majid Tafreshi, said that all citizens in Iran are “equally protected by the law,” and said that journalists and NGOs have freedom of expression.

Syria said at the debate: “We commend Iran’s active efforts to increase healthcare services by building medical care in rural & urban areas.”

China said it “commends Iran’s efforts to eradicate poverty, enhance social security, protect the rights of vulnerable groups & hopes Iran will continue to drive economic & social development to provide a solid basis for the enjoyment of all human rights.”

Russia praised Iran’s “cooperation with human rights treaty bodies and openness for dialogue.”

In a preliminary debate on the report in November, 95 out of 111 countries that took the floor praised Iran for its human rights, UN Watch reported.

Yes, Iran is a model for human rights, lol.
What a fucking shit show the UN and most of its organisations have become.

Well, if 3.5 million people die, it will be devastating.

All my family members over there are self-isolating. If it is only the religious ones ignoring the risk of contagion then in the long run coronavirus may help reverse some of the retardation that Iran has had to put up with since the Islamic invasion and more recently the 1979 revolution by thinning out the fanatics.

The Iranians did not handle it well themselves, while Americans themselves also suffer from the epidemic now. Sanctions have no effect either way (Iran is not that important to the United States I suppose), so this taunt is both pointless and stupid.

And they really don't think their participation of the Syrian conflict involve war crimes?

The sanctions could be lifted immediately and very easily.

The Iranian Government has to stop building nuclear weapons, stop building ballistic missiles, announce that they no longer wish to attack other countries and that they will stop supporting terrorist groups.

It is that simple.

I am sure Israel would offer them a prime location to open their Embassy in Jerusalem, the eternal capital of the Jewish Homeland :excited:

Trump says he's instructed Navy to 'destroy' any Iranian gunboats harassing US ships

President Trump said Wednesday that he's instructed the U.S. Navy to "shoot down and destroy" any Iranian gunboats harassing American ships, in the wake of a tense encounter in the Persian Gulf.

"I have instructed the United States Navy to shoot down and destroy any and all Iranian gunboats if they harass our ships at sea," Trump tweeted.

The encounter happened last week. Six U.S. Navy warships were conducting drills with US Army Apache attack helicopters in international waters off Iran last Wednesday when they were repeatedly harassed by 11 Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Navy vessels, the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet reported.

The Iranian ships repeatedly crossed in front and behind the U.S. vessels at extremely close range and high speeds, including multiple crossings of one ship, the Puller, with a 50-yard closest point of approach and within 10 yards of another ship, the Maui's, bow, a 5th Fleet statement said.

The Navy also reported that the USS Paul Hamilton, USS Firebolt, USS Sirocco and USCGC Wrangell, as well as the Puller and Maui, were involved in the exercises.

The U.S. crews responded by issuing multiple warnings via radio -- including five short blasts from the ships’ horns and long-range acoustic noise maker devices, but received no response from the IRGCN, the Navy’s 5th Fleet said in a statement.

After approximately an hour, the Iranian vessels responded to the radio queries, before maneuvering away from the U.S. ships and increasing the distance between them, according to the Navy.

IRAN SUSPECTED OF SEIZING, RELEASING HONG KONG-FLAGGED TANKER NEAR STRAIT OF HORMUZ

The Navy said that the Iranian’s dangerous and provocative actions “increased the risk of miscalculation and collision” and were in violation of international maritime “rules of the road.” The Navy also said they were not in accordance with international law to act safely with other vessels in the area.

The incident last week came one day after Iranian gunmen stormed a Hong Kong-flagged tanker in the Strait of Hormuz before quickly leaving when they learned the vessel was from China.

The U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, Marines and Army have been conducting joint interoperability operations in the Gulf since March.

The president’s directive also comes several months after hostilities between the U.S. and Iran which included an attack at the U.S. Embassy compound in Iraq that U.S. officials blamed on Iran.

In response, the U.S. carried out a strike that killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

Also, earlier this month, the president sent a stark warning to Iran, after claiming that Iran was planning a “sneak attack” on U.S. troops in Iraq.

"Upon information and belief, Iran or its proxies are planning a sneak attack on U.S. troops and/or assets in Iraq. If this happens, Iran will pay a very heavy price, indeed!" Trump tweeted.

Sources told Fox News earlier this month that the U.S. believes Iranian-backed proxies were planning the sneak attack, and that Trump's tweet was a warning to the Iranian leadership to tell their proxies to back down or face consequences.

I think this warning will be heeded by the Iranians.
Or not ?

Trump needs to order our military to destroy Russian planes who conduct unsafe intercepts of our aircraft and warships. Tell the Russians up front what will happen if they conduct an unsafe intercept of our planes and navy ships. If they don't heed the warnings shoot them down. They were given fair warning beforehand so they knew the consequences. But I know Trump is too much of a coward to do this to the Russians. I would though. We have to keep our service members safe. We have plenty of nuclear weapons too if we need to fire a few back at the Russians should they decide to further escalate things after they have been forewarned. If Putin wants to push this further then we can push it further. We're not trying to pick on the Russians but we have to keep our service members safe.

OK so a few questions:

- why did you post all this about Russia in the Iran thread ?
- in my opinion, Russia is not the enemy.
- I take note that you would consider a nuclear war with Russia. Holy macaroni ! Am I glad that Trump sits in the White House and not you !
- do you not agree with your President that Iran should stop its nefarious activities?

@Ter

We got to protect our service members. Russia is the one that is doing the provoking. It's not that I want a nuclear war but I also wouldn't let them push us around either. They just need to back off. Trump is too much of a coward to stand up to the Russians. He is not a level headed guy but at his core, he is an insecure coward that when confronted with a power like Russia who is a militarily stronger opponent than say Iran, he quickly backs down like the insecure coward and bully that he is. But Trump certainly seems to like to pick on countries that are significantly militarily weaker, like Iran.
